Great insights on the "Donor Covers Fees" debate
Asking donors to cover the cost of credit card processing fees along with their donation might sound like a good idea, right? Not so fast… In a recent experiment, we tested whether donors would be willing to cover this fee, thus making an even greater impact with their gift. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝: Hypothesis: Donors willing to pay fees would result in increased overall revenue. Reality: The "donor pays fees" option saw a 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟑𝟖.𝟓% 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 in conversion rates. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞: ~60% of donors opted to cover fees. However, this led to only a 3% increase in average gift, which didn't compensate for the loss in overall giving. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲? Adding transactional language like "fees" can deter potential donors, impacting conversion rates negatively. Donating is driven by emotion, and introducing transactional elements can disrupt the process. Have you tried a similar experiment like this at your organization?
