About us

Mayo Clinic has expanded and changed in many ways, but our values remain true to the vision of our founders. Our primary value – The needs of the patient come first – guides our plans and decisions as we create the future of health care. Join us and you'll find a culture of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect, and most importantly, a life-changing career. Mayo Clinic was founded in Rochester, Minnesota by brothers Dr. William James Mayo and Dr. Charles Horace Mayo. More than 100 years later, their vision continues to evolve around a single guiding value: "The needs of the patient come first." Today we are the largest integrated, not for-profit medical group practice in the world. We are recognized for high-quality patient care more than any other academic medical center in the nation. These endorsements are very gratifying, but also humbling. They remind us of the tradition that has been entrusted to each one of us, and the legacy of excellence that we uphold every day.

Congratulations to Sara M., who recently received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses! 🌼 Here is an excerpt from her nomination: "My young family member was diagnosed with a blood condition after completing her sports season. As a healthy teen, we were in shock and terrified. After a procedure, my family member was admitted. On their first day post-procedure, Sara was our nurse, and she immediately eased our fears. As a fellow ICU nurse, I had high standards, but Sara's kindness and thorough care allowed me to focus on being a mom. She advocated for my family member and patiently managed her anxiety. She understood when to push and when to offer choices, helping my family member regain some control during a very difficult time. Sara's care went beyond physical health—she made sure my family member had kid-friendly activities and resources to ease the stress of the situation. Her compassion and dedication made all the difference during this scary experience." Mayo Clinic is among over 5,000 healthcare organizations worldwide committed to the DAISY Award program. The DAISY Award is presented each month to an extraordinary nurse. If you know someone looking for a career in nursing, explore available opportunities at Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/3BzlLSM

From diagnosis to hospice, the needs of patients with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, are constantly evolving. The ALS Clinic team at Mayo Clinic is there every step of the way, working together to enhance quality of life and help patients continue doing what they love, even when facing tough challenges. For one patient, this meant finding a way to enjoy his favorite foods despite difficulty swallowing. As Mallory Riggs, a swallow specialist, said, "If he wanted to eat something, he was going to find a way." Through creative problem-solving, this team collaborates across specialties — from dietitians to speech pathologists — to help patients live life on their terms. Whether it's helping patients safely enjoy meals, supporting communication tools, or addressing complex care needs, the goal is to maximize independence and dignity. A recent Mayo Clinic study has linked frailty to poor outcomes for patients suffering from pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung. Frailty is a condition that often accompanies aging and is characterized by a reduced ability to cope with acute stressors, such as illnesses or injuries. Preventative measures to counteract frailty include maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity and staying socially active. Learn more: https://mayocl.in/3XLPXBA

Shanah Tovah! Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year, occurs on the first two days of the Hebrew month Tishrei. As is custom, the observances begin at sunset the day before and the High Holy Days continue through nightfall on the second day. Rosh Hashanah is a time of celebration and reflection and begins the High Holiday period, which includes Yamim Noraim, or the "Days of Awe," and culminates with Yom Kippur, the "Day of Atonement."

Walmart announced today the expansion of its Cancer Centers of Excellence program to include most cancers. Mayo Clinic is part of the program, which provides associates with high-quality cancer care.

Today, we’re sharing one of the newest investments Walmart is making to support the health and well-being of our associates: our Centers of Excellence (COE) health benefit program has expanded to include virtually all cancers! In collaboration with Mayo Clinic, this expansion provides associates with access to affordable, quality care when they need it most.     First and foremost, accessibility to great care at no cost regardless of where an associate lives has been our priority. So, we’ve made sure associates and their eligible dependents facing a cancer diagnosis can:   💠 Connect with our Cancer COE through their eligible Walmart medical plan to receive a no-cost review of their cancer diagnosis and treatment plan by the Mayo Clinic.   💠 And if the patient is recommended to travel to a Mayo Clinic for further evaluation and possible treatment, all costs will be covered, including on-site evaluations and treatment, travel and lodging for the patient and for a caregiver to travel and support them through the treatment.      We know receiving a cancer diagnosis can be one of the most stressful times in a person’s life, which is why we’re proud to offer this expanded benefit to help support the physical, emotional, and financial well-being of our associates. Thank you to Lisa Woods, Mike Jansen, Brandy Olson, and their teams for continuing to elevate our benefits in support of our associates and their families!     Read more below about our Cancer COE expansion and how the benefit helped one of our associates beat breast cancer.     #WellbeingAtWalmart
