Yesterday I ran my #Marines through PT with #chess integration. The goal was to #physically challenge my #Marines, test their #cognitive capacity under duress, and simultaneously teach them principles of #ManeuverWarfare and #operational art. In short, each company competed against the other. Each company had a dedicated lane in a PT circuit course. At the end of the course were a series of chess boards, with companies designated as white or black at each board. The kick is this - in normal chess, you take turns. Here, you can make moves as rapidly as you can get a competitor from your company through the lane. So if you can get two people to a board before your opponent, you get to move twice before they move once. For another kick, there were enough boards such that each company had two boards on which they were playing - each company had a board where they played as white, and a board where they played as black. So the added challenge is - which board do you move at? Do you 'mass fires' on a single objective, or distribute your forces? And how do you make these choices while under a time constraint where your opponent is looking to out-cycle you? How can you out-cycle your opponent within these limitations? In essence, the #Marines were challenged to literally outmaneuver one another in both physical and cognitive domains. There were additional nuances to the rules, and additional applications of operational art that were sussed out as a result in the following discussion. I'll aim to write about this event, and the basic approach to designing a training event like this, at more length via a different medium. But I hope this serves as an example and a template for other units to use in training their people. #ThinkFightWin #UPDATE: After receiving many individual requests for the documents, I've uploaded them to a shared drive for easy download. If you'd like a copy, please go here directly and download them at your convenience. I hope these helps and good luck! https://lnkd.in/eSGbNGRd

This Wargame Wednesday we tackle a serious problem. How do you pick the right game for your educational purpose? A great place to start is Board Game Geek. It is a simple Google search away from finding the right game. #wargame #wargames #wargaming #boardgames #boardgame #boardgaming #choice #training #education #learning #educational #usmc #Marines #marinecorps
