✨Life update: It’s a bit surreal, and such a bummer, to share that I was laid off while on maternity leave. While it’s bittersweet to part ways with Disney, a company that has been a significant part of my journey, I’m choosing to see this as an opportunity for a new adventure. Reflecting on my time at Disney, I’m grateful for the incredible stories I’ve been part of and the talented people I’ve worked alongside. From brainstorming hiring strategies, to building out interview guides, every moment was filled with creativity and inspiration. Now, I’m excited to explore new opportunities where I can sprinkle some of that Disney magic into fresh projects! If you know of any roles or connections in the entertainment or creative industries, I’d love to hear from you. Here’s to new chapters and the endless possibilities that lie ahead! #OpenToWork #NextChapter #Disney #Networking

Check out this super interesting article in the Financial Times. About half of job seekers are using AI to apply for jobs. This is leading to a ton of low-quality applications that “look” good at first glance, but really aren’t. Plus, applying at scale using AI - and a tough job market - has led to 2x the applicants per role! Recruiters are throwing their hands up in the air, and the problem is only going to get worse. If resumes and answers to job application questions aren’t useful, what is? Our answer: sharing a Professional Impact Narrative that shows who you are and provides real evidence you can do the job! #jobsearchtips #hiring #resume #opentowork #AI #career #jobs #professionalimpactnarrative #mccoy

The Rise and FALL of LinkedIn: It used to be a great platform for job seekers, but now... People are easily distracted. InMail became spammy, and AI has forced people to use AI to make it through a machine grading their capability. For the average person not in control of their attention, spending time on LinkedIn is akin to doom scrolling on another social media platform, and it is not the default option for your average employee. I’ve seen and used platforms like make.com, and Zapier, experimenting with auto-content generation. I got a call from a well known recruiting company today, telling me their company would help me find a job, but it was a bot. A text-to-speech BOT. Having a robot help you find work is EXTREMELY DEGRADING. People are not text profiles, and an ATS cannot fully capture someone’s ability to learn and adapt to new software or technology. Self-made career experts and people playing with no-code/low-code apps and OpenAPIs, allowing others to generate or pay machines to generate content FOR them… You have no idea if text is made by a person or a machine anymore. It’s not the best example of someone’s skillset. In order to TRULY find a good employee, you need to go looking for someone that still engages with PEOPLE, not just a keyboard. I found an app not long ago that has shown me a new way to do employment search. It’s bringing me back to better times when people actually TALKED with each other to do business and find employment. I've never seen a team or a product so dedicated to refreshing and renewing the hiring process as Josh Gafni, Ben Gafni, and J.T. O'Donnell at McCoy. The FIRST and BEST thing they do is verify the humanity of recruiters, hiring managers, and employment seekers on their mobile app. My new process: Use Notion db and a Kanban project management board to track my applications. Use SMYKM sales tactics that Samantha McKenna teaches on Apollo.io. Research the company, then look for a hiring manager’s email with Apollo and reach out to them directly, including my McCoy Reel and classic resume. Email still runs business, whether we like it or not, but text based recruiting and bots need to STOP. If you’re a hiring manager, please hear this: The current process is more akin to hiring a slave than TRULY being a servant leader and engaging with your employees. Consider talking with Kasim Aslam on how they hire top talent. If you’ve read this far, My name is John. I got laid off in 2022 and took a career break for mental health, family, and professional purposes to learn a LOT. I am a flexible worker and leader with lean/six sigma, agile/scrum, QA, automation, business process workflow, and UX Research experience. I now use generative AI to educate myself beyond my B.S. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech, where I focused on Human-Computer-Interaction, Psychology, Educational Technology, and UI/Product Design. This article in the Seattle Times says it all — it’s the worst time to land an internship in recent memory. There are many factors at play, but there’s a definite stigma around hiring interns: that they are too much work for too little benefit and that they might not even accept your offer for a full time job down the road. If you’re a student looking to land an internship, here’s how you can provide evidence that you’re a good investment and beat the odds! #internship #intern #opentowork #college #job #networking #career #jobmarket #professionalimpactnarrative #mccoy

To improve your chances of securing your next role, you need to show off your AI skills! Did you know that, according to Microsoft's 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report, “66% of leaders say they wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills” and “71% say they’d rather hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced candidate without them”? Mastering AI is not only crucial to keep pace at work, but it's in demand. Read our piece on steps you can take to incorporate AI into your work day and then demonstrate your AI abilities to potential employers (link in comments). #AI #AIFuture #ImpactEvidence #ProfessionalImpactNarrative #CareerHelp #OpentoWork #Work #FutureOfWork #Networking #CoverLetter #Job #Video #McCoy
