According to new data released by IDC, more than 195 million used smartphones, including officially refurbished and used smartphones, were shipped in 2023. This is an increase of 6.4% compared to 2022. IDC estimates the value of these shipments was $72.9 billion. 💲💲 This may seem like a significant number, but it represents just fraction of the number of phones sold. Between 2017 to 2021, an average of 1.5 billion phones were sold globally each year. Given their age, these are the phones most likely to enter resale markets in 2023. But 195 million is just 13.5% of the average annual number of phones sold in a given year over this period. Too many reusable phones end up in drawers or are simply discarded. 🚯 The potential for growth in smart phone resale is therefore substantial. Indeed, we are seeing rapid growth in the circular logistics systems dedicated to enabling phone reaggregation, refurbishment and resale. The map below shows 35 circular platforms serving the secondary markets for phones. These include platforms enabling wholesale transactions and platforms enabling resale to end customers. Some companies such as Back Market have been selling used phones since 2014. A number of startups have entered the market since, many with impressive funding. For example, last year, the circular platform Reuse raised $4.5 million in a seed round of funding to expand its operations in Mexico. We are also seeing some of the world’s largest platforms move to offer used phone. Amazon, Walmart and eBay have entered the market as has Alibaba Group through its circular platform Xianyu (Idle Fish). In Europe, Vinted which grew as peer-to-peer platform focused on apparel, has recently expanded into electronics including phones. The Indian platform Flipkart Reset is also expanding its role in the smart phone resale market. This week it announced a 'Flipkart Reset for Business' platform, which aims to serve retailers offering a wide selection of quality-assured refurbished smartphones and accessories. Reselling pre-owned goods can be a daunting process fraught with numerous obstacles. The friction associated with resale means that goods that could be resold often are not, pilling up, instead, in closets or worse in landfills. In this new article, I explore innovations that have the potential to dramatically reduce the frictions associated with reselling goods. A great example is the collaboration between Coach's Coachtopia sub-brand, EON a digital product passport provider, and Poshmark a platform company that orchestrates a resale marketplace with over 70 million users. Together, these companies are working to transform the resale experience with an innovative "instant resale" feature. This collaboration leverages near field communication (NFC) technology to simplify the resale process, addressing common challenges like authenticity verification and pricing. With this new system, Coachtopia customers can easily resell their items by tapping an NFC tag with their smartphone, which directs them to a pre-filled listing on Poshmark. This streamlined process not only enhances the user experience but also provides Coach with valuable insights into the resale market. These resale innovations have important implications for scaling circular fashion and sustainable consumption. As regulatory pressures increase and consumer demand for resale options grows, we can expect to see more brands and platforms adopting similar strategies.
