  • The Leadership Team's journey through the American Montessori Society Labposium was a deep dive into the multifaceted realm of artificial intelligence and its burgeoning role in society. On Day 1, the team explored the intricacies of generative AI, the distinction between narrow, general, and the as-yet theoretical super intelligence. The practical applications of AI were brought to life, from the granular analysis of medical data to the creative arenas of content creation through tools like Bard and Bing, and the rich possibilities in image generation with Mid-Journey and DALL-E. A particular highlight was the emphasis on the potential and pitfalls of AI in education, discussing how AI can be tailored to individual learning plans with brainstorming and interactive storytelling. The discussions moved beyond AI's capabilities to its ethical use, stressing the importance of fact-checking, privacy, and the nuanced understanding of AI's influence on brain function and development.   Day 2 shifted the focus to the human aspect of technology—digital citizenship and intelligence. The team engaged with the concepts of managing digital identity, combating cyberbullying, ensuring cyber security, and fostering digital empathy. Through resources like the Digital Citizenship Curriculum and Duke's Digital Intelligence certificate, the team examined the alignment of technology with educational philosophies, highlighting the need for ethical technology policies in schools. The conference also shed light on the neurological impacts of digital technology, emphasizing the importance of balancing technological engagement with cognitive health and the development of the prefrontal cortex.    The AMS Labposium, through the lens of the Leadership Team's experience, was not just an academic exercise but a call to integrate AI and technology into our lives and workspaces responsibly. Nita Farahany's keynote presentation undoubtedly tied these themes together, underscoring the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies—an area where she has established herself as a leading thinker and influencer.

  • Recently, our staff participated in the second part of a workshop called Rooted Relationships, led by BELONG Partners (previously known as Sound Discipline). Rooted Relationships is organized in a unique way, infusing brain science and culturally responsive practices foundational to Beyond Partners. It draws from Adlerian psychology, promoting positive discipline and mutual respect. It also takes into consideration systemic oppression frameworks, trauma and brain science research, attachment theory, experiential and somatic education & therapy, and from the wisdom of the school communities they’ve been in partnership with over the years.   We had a chance to reflect on what we learned in the first part of the workshop before exploring the concept of Mistaken Goals and Misguided Behavior. This helped us understand the underlying reasons behind unwanted behaviors and how to address them effectively. Through a series of interactive activities and discussions, we learned the best practices for helping students in the classroom. The Rooted Relationships workshop was a valuable and enriching experience for our staff. It helped us gain a deeper understanding of the brain science and cultural factors that influence students’ behavior and learning. It also equipped us with practical tools and strategies to foster positive relationships and create a supportive learning environment. We are grateful to Belong Partners for facilitating this workshop and we look forward to bringing this new knowledge into the classroom! #rootedrelationships #montessori #staffdevelopment
