Last year, we announced that McKnight will be relocating to 921 South Washington Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, just a few blocks from the Washburn A Mill Building, our beautiful home for the last 20 years. We're proud to stay rooted in downtown Minneapolis, where we look forward to continuing to contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of our neighborhood and city.   Today, we are excited to share our progress and highlight how we'll manifest our commitment to climate action and equity through our new space. 🏢 Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/gx2kQHi5 Our climate-focused strategies for our new home include decarbonization, LEED Gold Certification, a cutting-edge HVAC system, sustainable building materials, access to sustainable transportation. Through our Midwest Energy & Climate Program, we're also supporting partners like The Historical Coliseum Building, the Community Action Network and Sabathani Community Center in their building sustainability and decarbonization efforts.   On the community and equity front, we're expanding our space for community use (including an in-house creative studio!), increasing accessibility, and investing in inclusive, equitable design that prioritizes emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being for all our staff and guests. We also want to shout out the many grantee and community partners who have worked alongside us to make this progress happen, including our office relocation project team led by KimbleCo and Studio BV, Greiner Construction, Action Construction, Dunham Associates, Inc.Mobilize Design & Architecture, Llc; grantee partner Habitable for helping us identify and source healthy, sustainable building materials; and furniture partners Parameters, Ltd., and Ideal Workplace Solutions.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/gx2kQHi5   #decarbonization #sustainabledevelopment #minneapolis #communitydevelopment #philanthropy

CONGRATS - We’re thrilled to share the 205 local newsrooms that are receiving a combined $20 million today from #PressForward! From newsrooms focused on people of color and linguistically diverse communities to others covering vast rural areas where they are the only news source for miles - these local journalists are filling the gaps where traditional coverage has fallen short. We were so thrilled by the extraordinary proposals—more than 900—that we doubled our initial plan and are supporting twice as many local newsrooms as expected. Americans are stepping up to write a new story for local news. 📰 Join us in supporting local newsrooms across the country: Donate to Press Forward's Pooled Fund today, and every dollar up to $5 million will be matched to support local newsrooms across the U.S. Learn more at pressforward.news/grantees.

Thanks for the great work of the Midwest Regional Community Land Trust for pulling together such an inspirational, committed, and gritty group from across the country. I was grateful to be there and rub shoulders with the practitioners of the CLT movement that is rooted in a response from and by former slaves and sharecroppers being evicted from their homes and land for registering to vote ~1969. A vivid reminder that the power and benefits of land control go far beyond simple economics. Much thanks to our Minnesota CLT partners leading the way in this important work!!!

Just finished up a 4-day Midwest Regional Community Land Trust (CLT) conference in Minneapolis this past week. Great open-source event with some of the most experienced CLT practitioners around creating and teaching in-depth CLT sessions on a multitude of CLT topics. Kicked off the conference with an opening "Roots of the CLT" session that featured the "Arc of Justice" video that tells the story of the first CLT in the US in Albany, GA. Strongly recommend it: https://lnkd.in/gh2vZiNm

“I firmly believe that the pursuit of equality, freedom, and democracy is intricately tied to the work of artists.” – David Mura David Mura is a Minnesota-based memoirist, essayist, novelist, poet, critic, playwright, and performance artist. His memoirs, poems, essays, plays, and performances have won wide critical praise and numerous awards. Arts & Culture Program office Bao Phi shared, “David Mura’s accomplishments are many. But what may not show up on paper is how he set a tone of selfless, community-forward, community-engaged artistic practice for decades in Minnesota, and how much of a mentor and role model he has been in laying a pathway for the next generation of artists.” We’re thrilled to feature him in our latest #CourageousCharacters spotlight. "As president of the Minnesota-based McKnight Foundation, I have seen democracy in the people and the movements that power change, which is why our foundation invests in organizations working to strengthen democratic participation." -McKnight President Tonya Allen    These recent reflections from Tonya highlight the critical importance of our collective efforts to strengthen and expand our democracy as we strive to build a just, creative, and abundant future in Minnesota and beyond.     We’re grateful to the peers, partners, and community leaders doing this work: groups like Unidos MN , ISAIAH, Project Optimist, and Art of the Rural organizing for meaningful change and helping communities bridge across differences; funder collaborations like Press Forward expanding access to local news; artist-activists like Ricardo Levins Morales inspiring movements through art and culture; and systems-thinkers like Hahrie Han and Rachel K. – to name just a few.    Read Tonya’s full article to see more of her thoughts on democracy and our collective call to action in this historic moment:

"The heart of democracy is the people, its pulse is the civic spaces that connect us, and its health requires us to reinvigorate our nation to see and value each other’s worth and dignity, including through our differences, so everyone belongs and can fully participate in keeping our proverbial 'house' undivided and collective heart beating." 💓💓 Hard as I try, I can’t predict what’s going to happen in November. But here's something I know for sure: The future is ours to build—and together, we can make sure the promise of American democracy is fulfilled, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This requires, among other things, strengthening our nation’s civic spaces, which are as vast and diverse as the country itself. I’m grateful to brilliant minds like Hahrie Han and Rachel K. who help us understand how to keep pushing forward, and the many McKnight partners who are bringing this reality to life every day. Check out my essay below to read more of my reflections on this pivotal moment in our nation’s history and the history of the world, and why strengthening democracy and our civic spaces should be an every day, every year priority.

Our grantee partner Native Sun Community Power Development is driving a new path toward Tribal sovereignty, an Indigenous-led energy revolution powering justice and jobs by deploying solar and electric vehicles across the Upper Midwest. Robert Blake, Native Sun's executive director and a member of the Red Lake Nation, says that to him, "an equitable energy transition means Native country leading the way." Their Electric Nation project will link 23 Tribal nations across the Upper Midwest with chargers, while also delivering 16 electric vehicles, from trucks to shuttles, to Tribal fleets across the region. Poised to reshape the future of energy and transportation for the state’s Indigenous communities, the project—among other Native-led initiatives—represents a spark for Tribal sovereignty, climate action, and the transition to a green economy. Native Sun has also been a critical partner in training a new generation of workers in collaboration with Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and Xcel Energy's Power Up Program, among other efforts, to join the thriving clean energy economy and to create pathways for them to secure well-paying, family-sustaining jobs in the renewable energy field. Especially with unprecedented resources flowing from the Inflation Reduction Act, the opportunity for Tribal energy sovereignty has never been greater, and the need for connection, capacity, and a guide along the journey is also great. We’re proud to be partnering with Native Sun alongside powerful changemakers Daniel Wiggins at Midwest Tribal Energy Resources Association (MTERA) and Cody Two Bears with Indigenized Energy. We are deeply appreciative for your innovative work and perspectives! Watch a video and read more about their incredible efforts to build Tribal energy sovereignty across the Upper Midwest: https://lnkd.in/gFYaTy39 📽 Video by Line Break with additional footage from Clean Energy Economy Minnesota, Lakeland PBS, and Sandia National Laboratories 📝 Writing by Lauren Boritzke Smith with Heartseed Creative. #TribalSovereignty #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction #InflationReductionAct
