The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) plans to invest $80 million from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the largest climate investment in U.S. history, into smart building technologies that will help reduce emissions, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance occupant comfort across an estimated 560 federal buildings. The “National Definition of a Zero Emissions Building,” by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), advances public and private sector efforts to decarbonize the buildings sector, which is responsible for more than one-third of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Global building technology society, ASHRAE called the move a significant milestone that “provides a clear market signal and consistent target, supported by measurable data, to propel the building sector towards a sustainable future.” The comprehensive guideline will be embedded in nearly every green building certification, adopted by leading investors, and utilized in federal programs.
