About us
We inspire, develop and drive leaders to solve the most critical challenges of our time. Founded in 1985 by John and Anne Welsh McNulty, our Foundation's values are informed by both families’ experiences as Irish immigrants welcomed by America and grounded in our belief in the value of education and the importance of opportunity. We believe in a few fundamental human desires: to live meaningful lives, to build better ones for our children, to have a stake in our futures and communities. We recognize the central role individual leadership plays in effecting change and enabling people to take control of their future and reach their potential. Our programs support individuals at different stages of their leadership journey, from elevating examples of high-impact leaders through the John P. McNulty Prize, and incubating leadership in students and individuals with great potential through our academic partnerships.

For 15 years, the State Infrastructure Fund NEO Philanthropy has played a key role in pro-democracy wins across the U.S., amplifying voices and removing barriers to civic participation. As our Director, Johnny McNulty, was quoted in Inside Philanthropy, because “SIF has on-the-ground relationships and the capacity to evaluate organizations in communities around the country in a way that a ‘modestly staffed family foundation’ isn’t equipped to do,” it has become an indispensable resource for foundations like ours. SIF’s efforts to increase voter turnout and dismantle structural obstacles are more critical than ever. Learn more about this work:

Sending our congratulations over to Aisha Nyandoro, a #McNultyPrize Winner and the force behind Springboard To Opportunities + Magnolia Mother’s Trust! This is such an incredible accomplishment and we are so proud to be able to support your work.
Chief Executive Officer at Springboard to Opportunities | Heinz Award Winner, 2024 | TIME100 Next Honoree | TED Speaker
Seeing myself on the cover of TIME is nothing short of surreal! 🌟 Growing up, my Granny always had a copy of TIME on her dining table and C-Span playing on the kitchen television. Thank you, Granny, for the blueprint; I have Next (Y’all like what I did there? #TIME100NEXT) 😂. To have Springboard To Opportunities’ advocacy efforts and groundbreaking work with the Magnolia Mother's Trust profiled for the world to celebrate is beyond my wildest dreams. This profile captures the incredible impact we are making in demonstrating the power of cash without restrictions, transforming narratives of deservedness, and reforming policies in service of creating systems that finally work for all of us. This post is in celebration of the innovators of the Magnolia Mother’s Trust, the first 20 mommas that I had the privilege of dreaming with when we launched this work in December 2018. I simply asked these women to “dream with me,” and because of the trusted community relationships, they gave me the honor of trusting me with their dreams. These women told us what they needed. All we did was LISTEN; all we did was BELIEVE them. Without these mommas trusting in what seemed impossible, none of this would be. Today, I celebrate that you are listening, too. I am honored, and I am beyond grateful. My God, My God, look at how you continue to bless. #GuaranteedIncome #MagnoliaMothersTrust #TIMEforCash #TIME100NEXT

“Leadership comes with a heavy sense of responsibility; it’s not about us, but about the issues and communities we care for.” - #McNultyPrize Winner Gloria Walton Under Gloria Walton’s leadership as President and CEO, The Solutions Project is working to protect and reclaim the narrative of communities living on the climate crisis's frontlines. Experiencing these challenges firsthand, these communities often have the most impactful solutions, yet less than 2% of U.S. climate philanthropy goes to BIPOC-led grassroots groups. Gloria’s work is driving a movement where those closest to the problem are leading the way to transformational change—uplifting themselves, their communities, and inspiring global action. Learn more about Gloria’s early beginnings in organizing and her leadership journey as CEO in the latest blog from The Aspen Institute:

How can those fighting for democracy around the world work together? 📣 Keseb recently partnered with the Stanford Social Innovation Review for an essay series on 21st-Century Democracy: Building a Transnational Innovation Ecosystem. In this century, while foes of democracy have developed sophisticated and innovative strategies leveraging cross-contextual connections, pro-democracy movements have remained largely siloed by national borders. Yordanos Eyoel argues that what’s needed is a strategic cross-pollination of ideas, innovations, and relationships across borders to bolster national and local pro-democracy efforts. Learn more by attending a virtual conversation entitled Building a Truly Reflective Pro-Democracy Public Leadership featuring Lindiwe Mazibuko, Tainah Pereira, Erin Vilardi, and #McNultyCatalystFund Awardee Yordanos Eyoel on Monday October 07 at 11:00AM ET. https://lnkd.in/eF-ZW7b9

“We’re just trying to bring ideas that are different and out of the box to our community.” - Mirei Endara de Heras President and Executive Board Member of Marea Verde, #McNultyPrize Winner Mirei Endara De Hera shared her four tactics on how to engage communities about climate change earlier this year at the Aspen Ideas Climate Summit in Miami. Marea Verde’s holistic approach to tackling plastic pollution across Panama prevents trash pollution from entering our oceans through the country's rivers by working hand in hand with the communities most impacted by this urgent crisis. #ClimateWeekNYC has inspired us to revisit Mirei’s words and share them with our network. Her work underscores the critical role that grassroots action and community-driven solutions play in addressing #PlasticPollution and climate change Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ePAGvRV2
