Last weekend the Writers Guild at Bloomington hosted a special reading in honor of #NationalLiteracyMonth featuring several VITAL students. VITAL volunteer Molly Gleeson organized the program, offering a 6 week class to help students from countries including Peru, China, South Korea, Egypt, Iran, Brazil, and Taiwan, plan and prepare their work! Thank you to Duane Busick for capturing the event on video. Volunteers in Tutoring Adult Learners (VITAL), tutors bring their expertise and passion to help adults improve their literacy skills. Their efforts make a real impact in the lives of learners—empowering them to achieve their goals, whether that's passing the driver's license exam, preparing for the citizenship test, or simply gaining confidence in everyday life skills. "While on the subject of burning books, I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and destroyed records rather than have to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles. So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House, the Supreme Court, the Senate, the House of Representatives, or the media. The America I loved still exists at the front desks of our public libraries." 'A Man without a Country' —Kurt Vonnegut The mission of the Monroe County Public Library is to strengthen our community and enrich lives by providing equitable and impartial access to information and opportunities to read, learn, connect, and create. Support our values of intellectual freedom, diversity, and accessibility by signing up for a free library card and exploring the resources at your Library. 📇 mcpl.info/card. #LibrarySignupMonth

"Libraries are more than just books. They’re community centers and safe havens. They’re a springboard for underprivileged people to improve their lives. They’re information hubs, where anyone can learn anything simply by being a member of the community." Check out this lovely opinion piece in the Indiana Daily Student featuring MCPL! #LibrariesTransform #Bloomington #LibraryJobs

Happy #DisabilityPrideMonth! We are committed to making Library buildings, collections, programs, and services accessible to all members of the community. One way we support accessibility in our community is through the Mobility Aids Lending Library (MALL) program! The MALL is a partnership between the Library, a group of local wheelchair users known as the Wheelie Women, and the City of Bloomington, IN Council for Community Accessibility. The MALL program matches "gently used" mobility devices free of charge to those who cannot afford them or only need them for a short period of time.
