While in undergrad at Stanford, I heard legends about this guy Muthu Alagappan, MD who seemed to have limitless potential - simultaneously inventing new basketball game theory (tbt "Muthuball") while crushing his medical school studies. He showed us aspiring pre-med types that becoming a physician didn't require you to sacrifice your extra-clinical interests, and was one of the early role models I modeled my own MD+ career after. As an EM-bound medical student at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, I met the inimitable Rishi Khakhkhar, MD, MBA on a tailor-made elective around value-based emergency medicine. As he stepped into his role directing Mt Sinai's virtual urgent care, we dreamed of designing care models where we could practice emergency medicine truly aligned with value-based care incentives. Reconnecting with Muthu years later in the early innings of his physician-entrepreneur journey, I couldn't shake the feeling that these two were destined to meet. Their complementary EM and IM training and shared ideals for the future of care delivery were truly two sides of the exact same coin. So Rishi was at the very top of my list when Muthu had asked me for suggestions for his founding clinical hire. Having the opportunity to support this rockstar team at a16z Bio + Health has been one of the most incredible full-circle moments for me and yet another example of the importance of physician-innovators in building a more accessible and efficacious healthcare system for our patients!
