In this article, we describe how an exploratory development of a standardized clutter questionnaire for websites produced an efficient two-factor instrument with excellent psychometric properties. Using multiple regression, we streamlined a website clutter questionnaire from 16 to five items (two measuring content clutter and three measuring design clutter). This resulted in a new standardized questionnaire for the perceived clutter of websites that measures two factors – content clutter and design clutter – plus an overall assessment of perceived clutter. #ux #uxr #userexperience #uxresearch #userresearch

By assigning numbers to response options you can use sophisticated univariate and multivariate methods to analyze data collected with ranking and rating questions. #ux #survey #userexperience #uxresearch #uxr

It's generally better to write with active voice because passive voice requires more effort for readers to understand. There are some social contexts in which passive voice is the better choice, but not when crafting survey questions. #ux #uxr #userexperience #survey #uxresearch

When analyzing SUS scores, is it better to compute the mean or the median? Our analysis of over 18,000 individual SUS scores from studies of over 200 products and services revealed the typical difference between SUS means and medians was about two points (medians a bit higher). #ux #uxr #uxresearch #userexperience #userresearch
Should You Use the Mean or Median of the SUS?

Open-ended questions require more effort to complete, but they can do things that rating scales can't, making them useful for exploratory research and follow-ups to gain insight into respondents' rating scale decisions. #ux #uxresearch #userexperience #userresearch #uxr

The margin of error for a 95% confidence interval around the mean (x-bar) of a continuous variable is roughly two times the standard error, which is the standard deviation (s) divided by the square root of the sample size (n). The confidence interval is the mean plus or minus the margin of error. #ux #uxresearch #userexperience #userresearch #uxr

If one size doesn’t fit all, then how can researchers understand what they can get with different sample sizes when planning a problem discovery study? The appropriate sample size for problem discovery studies depends on two factors – the smallest problem probability that it is important to detect and the desired discovery rate. We have developed tables and graphs to help UX researchers understand what they can expect to get with different sample sizes for problem discovery studies. #ux #uxresearch #userexperience #uxr #userresearch

Changes matter, but usually not that much. We reviewed the literature and conducted our own research on 21 rating scale format variables hypothesized to affect rating behaviors. Fourteen (two thirds) of the effects had an impact of 1% or less on scores and only the first two were statistically significant. Although some changes to rating scales can have a large impact, most have a modest to negligible effect. #ux #uxr #userresearch #userexperience #uxresearch
