Congratulations to Meat Industry Ireland and member companies in the launch of the Charter for Sustainable Irish Beef. Meat Technology Ireland is privileged to be supporting delivering the Charter, working alongside our industry, research organisation and stakeholder partners.
This morning, saw the launch of the Meat Industry Ireland Charter for Sustainable Irish Beef by Minister Charlie McConalogue. The Charter identifies key priorities for MII's beef processing members, such as increased investment, enhanced reporting and the implementation of methane mitigating breeding strategies. The Charter commits our members to accelerating the decarbonisation of beef production and encouraging best practice among their suppliers. It also requires them to protect the natural environment and deliver broad-based benefits for society while remaining profitable, maintaining livelihoods and enhancing food security. A panel of industry experts detailed the sustainability efforts undertaken in their supply chains, including learnings from their demonstration farms, regenerative agricultural practices and ambitious decarbonisation strategies. MII and its members are committed to accelerating sustainability progress and working towards the targets outlined in the National Climate Action Plan. Since 2015 MII members have invested more than €200 million in sustainability initiatives at processor and farm level. Meat Technology Ireland (MTI) is an industry-led ‘one-stop shop’ for meat processing research and technology, serving as a hub to co-ordinate all beef and sheep meat processing research needs. ICBF, based in Cork and Kildare is a leading provider of information-based genetics services to the Irish dairy and beef industry and is a key partner, along with Teagasc and the meat processors in MTI. We are currently looking for a Technician to join our ICBF team based in Tully Research Centre, Kildare Town. As part of the project, you will have specific responsibilities around the following areas: -Collection of Greenhouse gas data on cattle using Greenfeed machines located at the Tully research station and other selected farms. -Using a master file of AI sires to routinely identify progeny of interest to the project, based on data from the ICBF database. -Communication and support with the relevant herd-owners, including feedlot producers, on the animals of interest which will include their management, weight measures, collection of Greenhouse gas data, feed intake and logistics of transport between herds and/or to the slaughtering facility. -Interact with meat processing plants on the slaughtering of the animals of interest and ensuring the relevant data is collected and the appropriate samples taken. -Logistics of sample handling and transport of samples. -To interpret findings and present, where necessary, to stakeholders. -Participate in ICBF, Teagasc and Meat Technology Ireland (MTI) events. -To assist ICBF in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and action plan. #Beef2024 was an exciting day for the Meat Technology Ireland EnterpriseIreland TechCentres. Our digitalisation programme and high-tech equipment were on in display in the #AgExpo village. In the #GHG village, data from #methanemeasurement at pasture was presented for the first time, together with our work on #beefcarbonfootprint, measuring #entericmethaneemissions using the #GreenFeed system, an overview of Meat Technology Ireland, and commitment to #sustainability from farm to factory gate through #geneticimprovementresearch in partnership with . Thank you to all the Meat Technology Ireland researchers from Teagasc and partner ICBF on making #Beef2024 such a memorable occasion, to all at Teagasc involved in organising the event, Enterprise Ireland and our industry partners, ABP Food Group, Ashbourne Meat Processors, Dawn Meats, Kepak Group and Liffey Meats.
