82 students moved from the classroom to Mecklenburg County this summer! We had 32 college students and 50 high schoolers join the County as interns. The goal of our program is to give students a taste of what their future could hold, and they absolutely rose to the challenge. They gained hands-on experience, developed professional skills and explored the wide range of public service professions! We’re grateful for their hard work and excited to see where their journeys take them next.

Shout out to our Public Health team!
Happy Pride Charlotte! I’m so blessed to work with this amazing team. They gave up their entire weekend to bring vaccines, testing, health resources and a lot of LOVE to our community. We have some big health issues facing our community — we can’t solve them only in the office.

County Manager Dena R. Diorio is retiring effective July 1, 2025: https://meck.co/3WEIUKh “It has been the honor of my life to serve the residents and employees of Mecklenburg County,” said Diorio. “When I took this role, I wanted to make sure the County was always at the table to discuss issues, find solutions and improve lives for our residents. I have always believed that to serve our community, we must be bold and have a vision of how things could be. We needed to see what is possible, and how best to help people.” She steered the County through the economic crisis of 2008 that crippled the nation. Diorio’s financial vigilance allowed the County to maintain the much coveted AAA bond rating, which was transformational for the County’s financial landscape. Diorio’s career highlights include creating the MECK Pre-K program, giving thousands of four-year-olds the opportunity for a high-quality preschool education, and the opening of two Community Resource Centers to streamline and consolidate the delivery of critical human services, bringing them closer to where residents live and work. She launched a County effort to understand the impact of corporate-owned housing and built a County initiative to find, create and sustain affordable housing units. She was instrumental in creating a partnership with a Community Land Trust to rehabilitate and protect 32 houses and to keep them affordable in perpetuity. Diorio has spent 36 years in public service, starting as a social worker in New York. She became the County's Finance Director in 2007 and County Manager in 2014. We appreciate her many years of service and dedication to Mecklenburg County. Thank you, Dena.
