Today's food for thought: There’s an expected 15.6% compound annual growth rate in women’s health—so why isn’t medtech focusing more on women’s health? Senior Vice President | MedTech and Digital Health Strategist | MSK and Women's Health Thought Leader
I have never been a #feminist for the sake of #feminism, but I absolutely 100% believe that female leaders belong in the c-suite, and as Ruth Bader Ginsberg famously said, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.” Is it me, or are the tides finally turning on female leadership not just in the c-suite, but in #MedTech broadly, and in MSK specifically? #Ortho and #spine have always been male dominated fields – from the #surgeons, to the #reps, to the #executives – men dominated the OR, the boardroom, and the discussion – much of the cultivation beginning in college on the athletic field. Women on executive teams have often been relegated to administrative roles – HR, legal, compliance, but not the highest-level product, strategy, and P&L owning roles. But women bring so much to this world – a keen strategic mind, creativity, dare I even say empathy that is so sorely needed to connect the business world to the patients we serve. In the past few months I was so lucky to participate in the star studded MedExecWomen event and also in Materialise’s Leading Minds event, where a powerhouse at the forefront of 3DP is led by a brilliant woman - Brigitte de Vet-Veithen. It has been empowering to see the leadership that I hope my daughter will get to take for granted. We can still do better than 10-20% of the c-suite…but this landscape looks different than when I started my career. I have collated (a likely non-exhaustive list), of these fantastic female MSK leaders guiding us into a new world in MSK – ASC transitions, digital tools, a new frontier of value based care, pricing challenges, new global markets. I am grateful for those I know and eager to get to know more of them. · Yin Becker – VP, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Stryker (Since 2012) · Cheryl R. Blanchard, Ph.D. – President and CEO, ANIKA THERAPEUTICS S.R.L. (since 2020) · Rachel Ellingson – Chief Strategy Officer (since 2018), Chief Administrative Officer (2024), Zimmer Biomet · Kimberley Elting – President, Global Orthopedics, Orthofix Seaspine (Since 2022) · Leslie Storms – US President, DePuy Synthes (Since 2023) · Gwen Watanabe – Interim CEO, Augmedics (Since 2024) · Rebecca Whitney – CEO, Spine, Highridge Medical (Formerly ZimVie Spine) (Since 2021) · Karen Zaderej – CEO, Chairperson of the Board, axogen (Since 2011, 2018 respectively) How do we help inspire, promote, and elevate women early and in the middle of their career to fill the funnel so that we can increase visibility at the top? Thank you also to the female leadership at Health Advances who never made me feel like being female should hold us back. To co-founder Paula Ness Speers, and to our entire female only MedTech leadership team Susan Posner Tracy Walters Darcy Krzynowek and Alena Petrella. Not quite #MSKMonday or #WomensHealthWednesday – but you get the idea ;)
