Did you know that our farm orders over 300,000 individual seeds per season? It might sound unbelievable, but it's true. In 2021, as Covid-19 emerged and many sought outdoor activities, gardening and landscaping became two of the fastest-growing industries. Companies like Johnnys Select, based in Maine, faced overwhelming demand, leading them to temporarily close their website to cope with orders. At one point, they restricted seed sales to only farmers, ensuring the continuity of the local food system. Reflecting on this time, it's evident how fragile our food system can be. The phrase "from seed to table" resonates within the local food movement, yet few realize how close many farmers came to experiencing incomplete crops in 2021 and 2022. For instance, a tri-color bean, commonly used in New England, faced scarcity. To address this, farmers like myself resorted to ordering single colors from various vendors and creating a tri-mix, omitting the traditional yellow bean. This resulted in a higher cost and more labor to secure needed seed stock. Fast forward to today, the National and Local Landscape and Garden Center data indicate that the home gardening surge has subsided. As we navigate a somewhat new normal, many homeowners have shifted their focus, leading to a gradual balance in seed inventories. However, the realization of how swiftly our food system can transform remains a concern among farmers. Conversations with volunteers during our tasks of washing and packing often delve into the intricate layers of planning and labor necessary for executing an 18-week CSA or a 4-day on-farm program for schoolchildren. Medway Community Farm (MCF) is a highly multifaceted organization, with numerous moving parts. Laura and I emphasize that we aren't just planning for next week; we're looking ahead to 60 and 90 days from now. Our present actions have far-reaching implications. A seed shortage, for instance, can significantly impact subsequent events. Consider a Spring school program; it necessitates seedlings, which require 3-6 weeks for germination before they're ready for transplanting. Ordering those seeds happens in January, and the blueprint for that school garden technically begins in December. Back in September, we've started analyzing sales figures and strategizing potential changes for the upcoming year. Similar to any business, whether non-profit or for-profit, meticulous planning involving short and long-term goals is imperative. We must be strategic in meeting the community's needs while ensuring the organization's sustainability. To help support or volunteer at the farm please visit MedwayCommunityFarm.org
