New paper out. Self compassion is important but does compassion have a place as a feature of elite sport environments? The paper highlights that compassionate environments can promote performance in a sustainable way, but also that coaches express uncertainty with the use and implications of compassion. Open Access. 📣Consistent with Coach Jackson & Simone Biles, research has shown compassion to enhance resilience & recovery from distressing feelings & adverse events like mistakes & injury, among other things, including specifically in athletes (eg, Rothlin et al., 2019; Wilson et al. 2019; Zhang et al., 2023). Self-compassion is a kind supportive attitude towards oneself (Rothlin et al., 2019) & a facet of mindful awareness. One way to think about it: Consider how such a disposition helps “short circuit” inner fight-flight-freeze spirals & tamps accompanying stress reactivity in the body/brain. Congratulations to Simone Biles for Meeting The Moment on mental health & performance!! 👏🏼👏🏽👏🏿❤️🔥
I don't know who captured this powerful moment but these are the little nuances that I think are most powerful in the @Olympics. A legendary athlete - who has nothing left to prove to anyone on earth, still prepares her mind to achieve superhuman height, form, performance. I only wish we knew what she was rehearsing, talking about, battling, fending off, or simply finding peace before an explosive performance. @Simone_Biles - you make us all smile and shake our heads in disbelief and admiration. This photo is one of my favorites for some reason! The calm, the poise, the same socks that I've got on right now ha! The bandage to secure a slight support for the less than 100% calf/achilles. The details!!!! Perfect. @TeamUSA - thanks for this photo.
Ahem, Olympic fans… #Paris2024 ✨
