  • The Good Samaritan Foundation's Excellence in Nursing Awards recognize and celebrate nurses in Greater Houston who excel in their fields. We are excited to spotlight the amazing Memorial Hermann nurses who received awards this year. Meet Lori, who received the prestigious recognition of being one of few Gold Recipients for this year's awards. Lori graduated from nursing school in 1996 and moved to San Antonio to work as a trauma nurse. In San Antonio, Lori was trained by her director and now mentor of almost 30 years, Jamie. Lori moved back to the East Coast, but after many years of encouragement from Jamie, Lori moved back to Texas to join Forensic Nursing Services at Memorial Hermann in 2015. As a forensic nurse, Lori's patients are a constant source of inspiration. "Our role extends beyond patients care," she says. "Forensic nursing is the intersection between nursing and justice and we are advocates for our patients who are victims of trauma and violence. We provide compassionate care, comfort and do our best to set them on a path of healing but the patients and families are resilient on top of it all." While some days are more emotional than others, Lori says she could not imagine doing anything else and is excited that the award will bring attention to the forensic department and her incredible colleagues. "I am deeply amazed by my nursing counterparts in every walk of life and to be recognized by my colleagues, the ones that inspired me every day, is the ultimate award," she says. • As Memorial Hermann celebrates Disability Employment Awareness Month, meet Angelica Rivera, a social worker who says finding a community of support while living with a disability has helped her grow, both personally and professionally. “When I was younger, I was taught that I wouldn’t be hired if I told others about my disability, that people would treat me differently,” she says. “To me, Disability Employment Awareness Month is a chance to educate everyone on apparent and non-apparent disabilities and how we all can be inclusive of others around us, become advocates for others and empower those who are a part of the community. It means the change we so desperately need to see.” When she began working at Memorial Hermann, she not only found resources to help her in the workplace, but also network of others living with disabilities through Memorial Hermann’s Allies for the Improvement of Disability Experiences (AIDE) Employee Resource Group. “I joined AIDE when I was looking for resources and others that could help me while I was submitting disability accommodations for my lupus and fibromyalgia,” she says. “While I was reaching out for help, I came across the offer to become the membership leader and jumped at the opportunity to be an advocate for others like me.” She says having support has helped her transform her perspective about her disability and empowered her to be an advocate for others in her roles as a social worker and as a member of AIDE. "I am glad to know that with AIDE, there are people wanting to support me,” she says. “Having chronic pain is something I battle with on a daily basis, and it is a fight I work hard to overcome daily to show up for my patients as a social worker,” she says. “AIDE has given me an opportunity to strengthen my mission as a social worker, build a network of others who aren't scared of disabilities and cultivate skills as a leader.” Now, she’s using what she’s learned to help others and is looking forward to making more progress as part of AIDE. “We are committed to creating a culture at Memorial Hermann that recognizes disability diversity, promotes acceptance and respect of others, is mindful with actions and language around disabilities, and breaks down social stigmas about people with disabilities,” she says. #DisabilityEmploymentAwareness #EmployeeHighlight

  • As someone living with multiple sclerosis, Amanda says it’s important for everyone to recognize all disabilities exist, both visible and invisible. “I am much more aware that some people have a disability that people see, but that does not mean you necessarily know what is going on,” she says. “Others may seem ‘normal’ and have an invisible or less obvious disability. It’s all about being inclusive at work (and in life), not jumping to conclusions.” That’s why she joined Memorial Hermann’s Allies for the Improvement of Disability Experiences (AIDE) Employee Resource Group to help educate others about living with a disability and to support her colleagues in the workplace. “My disability is invisible, so I have been very open about having multiple sclerosis and limitations that may arise when I am exposed to triggers,” she says. “Partly because I feel like I should educate others about warning signs that may be MS, but also because I don’t want anyone perceiving that I am not giving something my all. I believe this is a common concern for many with a disability, especially in the workplace.” As Memorial Hermann celebrates Disability Employment Awareness Month, Amanda encourages others to take time to learn more about the disability community. “I encourage others to speak to that person in their life with a disability and find out if there are triggers or concerns that they have,” she says. “Be aware and sensitive. Kindness is the best action to take.”

  • The Good Samaritan Foundation's Excellence in Nursing Awards recognize and celebrate nurses in Greater Houston who excel in their field. We are excited to spotlight Memorial Hermann Health System nurses who received awards this year. Ben has spent the majority of his career working in the cardiovascular unit at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, dedicated to providing exceptional care and advocating for his patients. Ben has been recognized for his compassion and dedication as a bedside nurse, charge nurse, preceptor and discharge nurse. But his role stretches beyond that. As the chair of the System Professional Governance Congress, he is involved in the advancement of quality practice and outcomes, process improvement, equity, diversity and workforce health trough participation in meetings and events for nurse advocacy at the local and state levels. Ben was honored to be nominated for this year's Excellence in Nursing Awards, but he was overwhelmed when he learned that he was a silver award winner. "Receiving recognition like this is one of the things that makes you want to come back and continue doing the work, day after day. The encouragement is telling that you are doing something right and making a difference." While Ben has had a positive influence on his patients, colleagues and the health care community, he remains grateful for a supportive environment that allows him to succeed. #Nursing #Houston #EmployeeHighlight

  • Time matters in critical care. That's why Memorial Hermann Health System recently launched a new Ground-to-OR process to reduce the time it takes for critically ill or injured patients to receive treatment in the operating room. “It all starts with the first responders,” says Susannah “Meg” Michael, Memorial Hermann adult trauma program manager. "Our EMS agencies in Greater Houston are at the cutting edge of prehospital care and help define the way things are done nationally. We count on their expertise to continue to move the needle in optimizing prehospital trauma care as a city and trauma system.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/403dRvf.
