CONSCIOUS DESIGN IGNITING WELLBEING
About us
DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE + WELLNESS Founded by Anissa Mendil, WELL AP, and Ben Meyer, AIA, Mendil + Meyer Design Studio is a team of designers, architects and creatives who are committed to the creation of conscious, purposeful spaces that delight, relax, and heal. Whether we are working with a resort, restaurant, hotel or residential client, our process starts with research, an exploration into the project’s purpose. Its location and historical context, culture, business and market considerations, together with aesthetics and the functional needs of a space, are all considered from the outset, resulting in a cohesive, memorable and powerful gestalt. Given our European origins, our perspective is global, and this has served us well in understanding the diverse needs of different cultures when designing for clients serving an international clientele. Where possible, we look to incorporate ideas and materials that contribute to wellness and sustainability. Our experience has shown us that small incremental adjustments can make a huge difference. These changes may include incorporating natural elements to satisfy our innate need for a connection to nature; choosing non-toxic materials for improved air quality; incorporating ethically sourced materials that endure; or optimizing energy flow for enhanced wellbeing. As experienced professionals, we understand the importance of collaborative relationships built on empathy and trust. Guiding the project from start to finish, we recognize things change and there is always the need for responsiveness, resourcefulness and flexibility. This open, dynamic exchange also exists between the disciplines of architecture and design. Rather than existing in separate silos, we maintain a flow of ideas back and forth. Working in this way—from the “inside out” and the “outside in”—not only enhances the interplay of creative ideas, but also results in greater efficiency and ultimately, a better product.

Designing with Neuroscience in Mind: More Than Meets the Eye What makes a space feel inviting, calming, or inspiring? Why do certain environments put us at ease while others leave us restless? The answer lies in the way our brains respond to design. Neuroscience-backed design isn’t just about aesthetics...it’s about creating spaces that shape our emotions, enhance well-being, and foster connection on a subconscious level. Elements like natural light, contrasting textures, organic materials, and spatial harmony all influence how we experience a place. The warmth of wood can evoke comfort, the stability of stone can instill a sense of grounding, and the interplay of shadow and light can guide perception and mood. From hospitality to home design, integrating neuroscience means crafting spaces that don’t just look beautiful but feel intuitively right. This is where design moves beyond decoration to become an experience. https://lnkd.in/gqeJGu6B

Neuroscience at home and in the office: At Mendil + Meyer Design Studio, we believe our own spaces should be an extension of our design philosophies. Here’s how we bring neuroscience into our daily environments, both at work and at home: 1. Sensory Harmony: We’re intentional with textures, lighting, and scent, adjusting them daily to create a calm and focused atmosphere. 2. Natural Materials: From living plants to stone accents in our home, natural materials are key to grounding us and calming our minds. 3. Spatial Flow: Whether at home or in the office, we thoughtfully arrange our spaces to minimize clutter and enhance balance, ensuring movement feels effortless. 4. Biophilic Design: We bring nature indoors with plants and organic elements, boosting mental clarity and reducing stress. 5. Emotional Connectivity: We infuse personal touches like meaningful art and treasured objects into every room to keep us emotionally connected to the space. Design Archives: CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa Designing the spa at CIVANA was an exploration into the interplay of texture and sound to create an immersive experience, where every surface and echo played a role in shaping the atmosphere. The natural creak of the sauna’s fine wood, the rippling of the water in the hot spa, the acoustic wood spheres at the check-in desk that soften sound and create a welcoming stillness.

Project Highlight 004 Designing Atria Restaurant in Flagstaff, AZ was an exploration of the senses—a seamless interplay of touch, sight, and taste. Velvet banquettes invite intimacy, while terrazzo-topped tables set the stage for culinary expression. Blush tones and herringbone wood floors ground the space in warmth, creating a quiet harmony that lets the cuisine take focus. Every detail was chosen to evoke an atmosphere where design and dining converge, inviting moments of connection and reflection.

Design Highlight: Modern Penthouse In this Modern Penthouse, design becomes a conversation between dark and light, bringing harmony through contrast. This project was about design transcending aesthetics and about creating harmony through contrast. Sleek, contemporary metals meet the natural warmth of wood, creating a sophisticated yet grounded space. Custom ceiling panels and cabinetry introduce a rhythmic balance, while dark metal finishes deepen the space, adding an air of modernity and depth. The play of textures and materials evokes a sense of organic refinement, offering a sanctuary amidst the city's pulse. It’s not just design; it’s a seamless blend of energies, where every element is intentionally placed to invite calm, connection, and timeless harmony.

At Senza Hotel in Napa, we envisioned a space where design becomes an extension of connection and storytelling. The rich mauve shelving evokes a sense of depth and intimacy, creating a tactile warmth that anchors the room, while the textured stone fireplace acts as a grounding focal point, bridging structure and serenity. Each element, from the bespoke furnishings to the layered materials, was curated to engage the senses and cultivate harmony. This is design as an art form: creating spaces that don’t just welcome, but invite meaningful connection and timeless experiences.

Every journey is a mosaic—fragments of moments, places, and people that shape the essence of who we are. These images from our roots remind us of where it all began: a childhood in Germany and England, sketching dreams into the margins of school notebooks; travels that opened our hearts to the world; and the serendipity of falling in love along the way. Twelve years ago, we traded our homes in Europe for Arizona’s vast desert light. It was here that our vision as creators, partners, and dreamers truly came to life. Each step of the journey—every challenge, leap of faith, and triumph—has brought us closer to the life we've designed today. As we enter this new year, we reflect on the past and look forward to the possibilities ahead. Our intention for 2025 is to create spaces that inspire, to design with soul, to deepen our connection to the land and each other.
