CONSCIOUS DESIGN IGNITING WELLBEING
About us
DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE + WELLNESS Founded by Anissa Mendil, WELL AP, and Ben Meyer, AIA, Mendil + Meyer Design Studio is a team of designers, architects and creatives who are committed to the creation of conscious, purposeful spaces that delight, relax, and heal. Whether we are working with a resort, restaurant, hotel or residential client, our process starts with research, an exploration into the project’s purpose. Its location and historical context, culture, business and market considerations, together with aesthetics and the functional needs of a space, are all considered from the outset, resulting in a cohesive, memorable and powerful gestalt. Given our European origins, our perspective is global, and this has served us well in understanding the diverse needs of different cultures when designing for clients serving an international clientele. Where possible, we look to incorporate ideas and materials that contribute to wellness and sustainability. Our experience has shown us that small incremental adjustments can make a huge difference. These changes may include incorporating natural elements to satisfy our innate need for a connection to nature; choosing non-toxic materials for improved air quality; incorporating ethically sourced materials that endure; or optimizing energy flow for enhanced wellbeing. As experienced professionals, we understand the importance of collaborative relationships built on empathy and trust. Guiding the project from start to finish, we recognize things change and there is always the need for responsiveness, resourcefulness and flexibility. This open, dynamic exchange also exists between the disciplines of architecture and design. Rather than existing in separate silos, we maintain a flow of ideas back and forth. Working in this way—from the “inside out” and the “outside in”—not only enhances the interplay of creative ideas, but also results in greater efficiency and ultimately, a better product.

Every journey is a mosaic—fragments of moments, places, and people that shape the essence of who we are. These images from our roots remind us of where it all began: a childhood in Germany and England, sketching dreams into the margins of school notebooks; travels that opened our hearts to the world; and the serendipity of falling in love along the way. Twelve years ago, we traded our homes in Europe for Arizona’s vast desert light. It was here that our vision as creators, partners, and dreamers truly came to life. Each step of the journey—every challenge, leap of faith, and triumph—has brought us closer to the life we've designed today. As we enter this new year, we reflect on the past and look forward to the possibilities ahead. Our intention for 2025 is to create spaces that inspire, to design with soul, to deepen our connection to the land and each other.

Design Notes from our project with at Piñon Court, Santa Fe. In the quiet of winter, design takes on a deeper meaning—a chance to reflect, restore, and connect to the spaces we inhabit. In the lobby of the @pinoncourt, two blue art pieces embody this ethos, bringing a sense of calm and history to the season. Once doors at the historic La Fonda, these reclaimed works have been thoughtfully reimagined to honor their past while embracing a timeless aesthetic. Their weathered textures and serene hues evoke the stillness of winter, creating a space that feels grounded and reflective. Here, design isn’t just functional; it’s a reminder of the beauty that comes from preserving the past and embracing the present, offering a moment of peace in the heart of the season.

Last week, we had the honor of stepping into the transformative embrace of Palmaia for Wanderlust—a sanctuary where nature, design, and spirit harmoniously intertwine. Here, the architecture reverently yields to the land: trees pierce through jungle decks, ocean-facing rooms cradle you between sea and jungle, and the open-air "Mushroom" pavilion redefines connection, creating space for ceremony and community beyond traditional walls. Grounded in natural materials and local craftsmanship, Palmaia is a retreat where design and transformation are inseparable. Luminaries like Donovan McGrath, Layla Rehana, Rosie Acosta, Ryan Leier, Jonah Kest, and Danielle LaPorte guided us through moments of introspection and renewal. From somatic dance and pranayama to gong baths and human design workshops, every practice was steeped in the healing energies of the jungle and ocean. A sunrise ceremony led by the Palmaia Architects of Life welcomed us with intention, setting the tone for days filled with workshops that rekindled the beauty of presence and the power of connection. At Palmaia @thehouseofaia, every detail—from breathtaking woven fiber art to soul-stirring classes—is thoughtfully crafted to align you with nature, your innermost self, and a collective spirit. Thank you for this extraordinary journey. We’re already counting the days until next year.
