MENTOR CEO Jermaine Myrie recently had the honor of speaking at MENTOR Newark's "Welcome to the Yard" event.🙌 This event was a powerful celebration of HBCU's, mentoring, while also spotlighting MENTOR Newark's Heritage Hall, co-curated by local students and their mentor. “The work that MENTOR Newark is doing to uplift and center Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the consciousness of young people in the greater Newark area is transformative. We know that HBCUs continue to be the leading producers of black doctors, judges, teachers, and engineers in the United States. And having young people become aware earlier about the relevance and impact of HBCUs will only further strengthen our future leaders' economic and social access.”- Jermaine Myrie ➡️Swipe for a look into this wonderful event! #MentoringAmplifies #tamaraflemingphotography

🌟 As we wrap up #HispanicHeritageMonth, it’s vital to remember that our efforts to support Latinx youth must continue year-round. Our latest blog post dives into the essential role mentors play in fostering civic and political engagement among Latinx immigrant-origin youth. These young leaders are at the forefront of critical conversations about citizenship, human rights, and belonging. Through their activism, they drive significant change. However, navigating spaces often dominated by adults can be challenging, particularly for first and second-generation immigrants. Our multi-year study, in partnership with MENTOR and its Affiliates, highlights how mentors can influence youth in their civic journeys. By understanding these dynamics, we can better equip youth-serving organizations to empower young voices. Let’s continue to nurture the political engagement of our youth beyond this month! We got a shoutout at The White House today! 🌟 🎊 Just moments ago, the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) made an uplifting announcement: Within 2 years of being asked by the president to help students nationwide overcome the pandemic's impact on academic success, an estimated 323,000 adults have answered the call to action! One of the key takeaways from the event was the unveiling of findings from the report by the Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University. The data highlighted the progress we’ve made toward addressing learning gaps and well-being setbacks caused by the pandemic. What helped this become a reality? The powerful collaboration among schools, districts, nonprofits, higher education institutions, AmeriCorps programs, National Student Support Accelerator, and government leaders, all united to ensure students can thrive despite the challenges of the pandemic. This support network is essential for helping students bounce back from the educational and social-emotional impacts of the past few years. Speakers Cindy Marten (U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education), Neera Tanden (Domestic Policy Council Director), and Michael Smith (AmeriCorps CEO) all emphasized the importance of this initiative and the incredible impact it has already had. Their remarks reminded me how much progress can be made when we align national and local efforts, fueled by the dedication of educators, leaders, and community members alike. Additionally, resources and tools that could help #schooldistricts implement successful #tutoring programs – like our new LEA Self-Assessment! – were shared by Jermaine Myrie of MENTOR at the event.
