Restaurant Spending and Traffic Spending Patterns: Declined in January and February 2025, per credit and debit card data. Showed improvement in early March, though Bloomberg data indicates flat sales compared to a year ago. Full-service restaurant sales are down year over year, while fast-casual and fast-food spending has improved. Foot Traffic: Down year over year through March 2, per Placer AI data. Employment: Restaurant employment dropped sharply in February 2025. Historical Context: Dining-out cuts preceded the 2008-09 financial crisis, starting in late 2007. Consumer Behavior Dining Frequency: Americans dine out ~5 times and order delivery ~3 times monthly (U.S. Foods 2024 Diner Dispatch). Average Spending: $191/month at restaurants in 2024, stable in recent years. Income Variation: Higher-income households’ dining spending has held up better, though all income groups reduced spending in early January. Broader Economic Signals Consumer Sentiment: University of Michigan’s index fell 11% from February to March 2025, hitting its lowest since 2022. Inflation expectations rose: 1-year to 4.9% (from 4.3%), 5-10-year to 3.9% (from 3.5%), the highest since 1993. Groceries: Women spend $323/month ($3,876/year) vs. men’s $290/month ($3,480/year) in 2023, up from 2021 due to inflation and habit shifts (Billpin, 2023). Per trip: Women average $44.43, men $34.81 (Nielsen, 2023 via Lexington Law). 78.2% of women are primary family shoppers (FinanceBuzz, 2025). Eating Out: Men spend more on dining out, a trend holding into 2025, driven by “experiential” purchases (Jungle Scout, 2021 via 2024 analyses; ElectroIQ, 2025). Women spend less, linked to grocery focus and 58% saver mindset (vs. 36% for men) (Jobera, 2024). Alcohol (At Home): Men outspend women by 26% on total alcohol, including at-home buys (ElectroIQ, 2025). Additional Food-Related Insights Meal Delivery & Convenience: Men favor meal kits and delivery, spending $10 more per online transaction (ElectroIQ, 2025). Grocery Shopping Habits: Women prioritize cost-effective solutions, with 47% shopping online longer vs. 39% of men (ElectroIQ, 2025).
