Committing to Zero for MEP Systems
About us
MEP 2040 is a movement to radically reduce total carbon emissions associated with building systems through collective action. The original MEP 2040 Challenge from the Carbon Leadership Forum: “All systems engineers shall advocate for and achieve net zero carbon in their projects: operational carbon by 2030 and embodied carbon by 2040.” The Carbon Leadership Forum issued the Challenge in the fall of 2021. A group of leaders from MEP firms responded to the Challenge and collectively established a Commitment for you to join. Moving forward, this group of leaders will be responsible for convening signatories around a common goal. The MEP 2040 Commitment: * Establish a company plan * Request low-GWP refrigerants * Request EPDs * Participate in Forums

Reducing #embodiedcarbon and optimizing MEP systems requires a strong framework for system thinking, a clear roadmap with stretch targets, and a thorough business case analysis to understand the return on investment. Viewpoint column by Ghina Annan, Associate and Decarbonization Business Lead at Stantec "The impact of #MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) systems on a building’s embodied carbon is substantial, accounting for 15% to 50% throughout the building’s lifespan. This impact can rise to 70% or more in commercial buildings undergoing retrofits, as highlighted in CLF’s tenant fit-out study. The challenge of designing and specifying MEP equipment involves not only functional and operational efficiency but also minimizing the #lifecycle #carbonfootprint of these systems. My work involves supporting the industry in achieving national and global carbon reduction targets, including #netzero and climate emission goals." https://lnkd.in/gAqufPYi

NORTHEAST EMBODIED CARBON SUMMIT 2024 Tickets now on sale! This summit marks five years since the BSA held the Embodied Carbon in Buildings Conference which led to the development of the EC 101 Series and the creation of the CLF Boston / Northeast Hub. In the past five years, great strides have been made through advocacy, research, education, outreach, and implementation - nationally and regionally. There have been advances on many fronts including policy, concrete, biogenic materials, adaptive reuse and more case studies. The goal of this summit is to come together to learn from each other, provide resources to the broader AEC community, and to advance our collective efforts. Tickets now on sale for the Northeast Embodied Carbon Summit! Please join us June 20-21, 2024 for a series of panels, discussions, and workshops. https://lnkd.in/gz5g8q6S

DOE Releases First Ever Federal Blueprint to Decarbonize America's Building Sector! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) of Energy led the development of a Blueprint for decarbonizing U.S. buildings by 2050 to lay out a national strategy for aggressively reducing building #greenhousegasemissions while delivering #equity, affordability, and resilience benefits to communities. The vision includes action the federal government can take to meet specific targets for increasing building energy efficiency, accelerating onsite emissions reductions, transforming the grid edge, and minimizing #embodiedcarbon #lifecycleemissions. The national strategy reflects the central role that buildings play in achieving economy-wide climate goals while delivering cost savings, healthier environments, and high-quality jobs for the American people. Federal agency coordination and support for state and local actions is essential to accelerate the transition to low-carbon buildings. https://lnkd.in/gdH-vENa

**DOE asks for Comments on Zero Emissions Building Definition** The Biden-Harris Administration is asking for informed comments on a proposed definition for #zerocarbon greenhouse gas emission buildings, and we urge the MEP 2040 Commitment community to take the time to read the draft and provide informed comments. The deadline for comments is 5 Feb 24, and there will be two online “listening sessions” the mornings of January 11 and 30 – “seating” is limited to the first 100 registrants to each session. Note that the current draft is for #operationalcarbon GHG emissions only – it doesn’t have definitions for #embodiedcarbon, or the impact of fugitive #refrigerant emissions, which are proposed to be addressed in future versions of the Definition. We think that it is of some interest that ASHRAE/ANSI Standard 228-2022 “Standard Method of Evaluating Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Carbon Building Performance” is already a consensus national technical standard that defines net zero operational emissions. It even includes information about refrigerant fugitive emissions. Rather than try to achieve consensus on a “new” definition, we think it would be more effective, and expedient, to adopt Standard 228, which would also allow the inclusion of the impact of operational refrigerant fugitive emissions (which the MEP 2040 Commitment already recognizes as very significant) now, rather than at some future date. CALL TO ACTION: Provide your feedback and sign up to attend the Listening Session here! https://lnkd.in/g8mVrvZr
