In case you missed our newsletter push today... You’ve probably seen the headlines about the legal conflicts between WordPress and WP Engine, and you might have wondered, “What does this mean for my website?” Not to worry. Here’s everything you need to know: What Happened? WordPress, as you probably know, is an open-source tool for building websites, and it powers about 40% of sites across the internet. WP Engine is a separate organization built to host WordPress websites. In a nutshell, WordPress and WP Engine are fighting. WordPress is complaining that WP Engine: - doesn’t contribute enough cash to WordPress’s efforts - violates WordPress’s trademarks and confuses users into thinking it’s part of the WordPress company by using “WP” in its name WP Engine, of course, disagrees on both fronts. As of today (October 1), WordPress is now blocking WP Engine from accessing resources publicly available through WordPress.org. What Does This Mean For Your Website? At RedTree, we’ve always promoted WP Engine for its wide assortment of tools, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness. If we’ve worked together in the past, there’s a chance your website is hosted by WP Engine. If that’s the case, there’s currently no need to worry. In response to the issue, WP Engine is currently: - changing the names of some of its products to strip away the phrase “WordPress.” - scrambling to maintain security and service for all of the websites it hosts. As of this morning, we haven’t seen any issues with any WP Engine-hosted sites remaining up and readily available to site visitors. Do You Need to Do Anything? There’s no action for you to take at this time. With so much of the internet running on WordPress and WP Engine, it’s in both organizations’ best interest to quickly resolve their differences. We’re actively monitoring the situation at RedTree, and we’ll recommend any changes in your website’s hosting as the story develops.
