National Fire Prevention Week: Prepare, Protect, and Plan! With wildfires becoming more frequent and dangerous, it’s essential to have a Family Fire Escape Plan in place to protect your loved ones, including pets. 🌲🔥 Here are our tips to create a fire safety plan to keep your family safe: 1. Identify Escape Routes 🏃♂️🏃♀️: · Make sure there are at least two ways out of every room in your home. · Windows and doors should be easily accessible and free from obstructions. 2. Designate a Safe Meeting Place 📍: · Choose a spot outside your home where everyone will meet in case you're separated. · · ·This could be a neighbor’s house, mailbox, or a large tree. 3. Don’t Forget Your Pets! 🐾: · Plan for your pets' safety by knowing their favorite hiding spots. · Keep leashes, carriers, and emergency pet supplies near exits for quick access. 4. Practice Makes Perfect 👩👩👧👦: · Run fire drills with your family so that everyone knows what to do and where to go. · Regular practice ensures everyone is calm and prepared if a wildfire strikes. Stay prepared and stay safe. Being ready in advance is key to protecting your family in the face of a fire emergency! 🔥 #FirePreventionWeek #WildfireSafety #FamilySafety #SJSU #FireEscapePlan #PetSafety #BePrepared

🔥Wildfires are getting bigger, hotter, and more devastating when they intersect with a developed area and its population. Our Meteorology and Climate Science program at San Jose State University is unique. We specialize in studying the complexities of fire weather, localized weather phenomena created by the intense heat of wildfires, in order to keep both firefighters and impacted populations as safe as possible, alongside other highly relevant topics like climate change risk and solutions and how air pollution and cloud interactions can impact human health. We prepare students for careers in a wide range of industries: from companies working on air quality, impacted by severe weather, or mitigating climate risks, to any of the many fields that utilize sophisticated AI modeling, to careers on the front lines battling wildfire. 🌏 Craig Clements #SJSU #SJSUMetCS #SJSUMeteorology

#MetCSSpotlight We're turning our spotlight on to Associate Professor Adam Kochanski , an atmospheric modeler and leader of the fire modeling group at the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC). He is a co-developer of the coupled atmospheric model, WRF-SFIRE, and the fire forecasting platform WRFx. His research focuses on forecasting fire danger, fire propagation, and smoke dispersion. Meet Meteorology and Climate Science graduate student, Alana Macken. She pursued a degree in meteorology because of what happened in 2017—the Tubbs Fire. “Like 1 or 2 a.m,” Maken said. “My dad knocked on my door and just said, ‘We got to get out of here, we got to go.’” It was October 2017 and Macken’s father had woken her up in the middle of the night because the Tubbs Fire was racing toward their Santa Rosa home. “There was a hill behind our house and you see this orange glow that's five times as high as that hill,” Macken said. Read her story on NBC Bay Area on how Alana plans to study wildfires and weather to support others. https://lnkd.in/gYjxpCky Rob Mayeda #SJSUMetCS #SJSUMeteorology #SJSUWeather #AtmosphericScience

What a powerful story. Our graduate student, Alana Macken, shares her story of why she's studying wildfire...and it's a personal reason.
A terrific feature on one of our exceptional graduate students with a very personal reason for studying wildfire. San Jose State University SJSU College of Science #wildfire #climatechange https://lnkd.in/g5m_Szry
