While some workers are on their way to work, they hear a rumbling in the distance and look out their window to see a rocket blazing through the morning sky. Only a few know that the Pad Safety Team has been on console since late in the evening the day before, ensuring their safety. With the help of the Metis Pad Safety team, ULA’s Atlas 5 was launched for a final national security mission at 6:45am today from the Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The mission, designated USSF-51, is a classified National Security Space Launch. It marked ULA’s 100th national security mission, and the last NSSL launch on an Atlas 5 rocket. ULA’s next national security flight will be on the new Vulcan Centaur rocket, pending a successful second certification launch scheduled for September. The Metis Pad Safety Team have been ensuring public safety for all 100 missions and will continue as ULA transitions to the Vulcan rocket. Pad Safety Supervisor Drew Codner stated, “I’m so glad Metis gave me the opportunity to work here and be a part of history!”
