MetroLab Network and National Science Foundation (NSF) CIVIC Innovation Challenge team provided two packed days where we learned about the work of all the teams across the country. It was so inspiring learning about all the amazing projects and partners involved. The team engaged and working on the Veterans Memorial Park Smart Rain Garden in City Of Cape Canaveral were prominently featured with footage of Zachary Eichholz and Jason Evans in the new video highlighting the CIVIC Innovation Challenge program. It was amazing seeing the video about our project on a big movie screen! We also had the opportunity to talk with new Stage 1 teams about our successes on this project, which is a great opportunity for other teams to learn the work necessary to make this type of project possible. Overall I learned a lot. I really enjoyed talking with so many other people doing innovative work in communities across the country. https://lnkd.in/etEGm58Y Brenda Defoe-Surprenant Timothy Carlisle Nickolas Macchiarella #civic #NSF #resiliency

What an incredible experience—watching myself and my colleagues on the big screen for the first time! 🎬✨ (and this is why I couldn't make it to Abu Dhabi for IROS😂)! A huge thank you to the #NSF #CIVIC program (David Corman, Vishal Sharma, Ph.D., Jacob Kravetz, David Alexander) for your continuous support. 🙏 Shoutout to MetroLab Network (Kate Garman Burns, Rose Mische Commins) for organizing this amazing CIVIC Forum event—you’ve officially made my childhood movie-star dreams come true! 🤣 Most importantly, I want to recognize my amazing students (Bilal Sher, Sruti Madhusudhan, Talha Javed, Kevin Lee, Ishaan Pitty, Wayne (Wei-Heng) Lin, Rushab Dwivedi, Asish Boggavarapu, Shubham Garg, Ping Chang, Archit V.K. Sharma, etc.), community partners (Leslie D., Paul Rothman, etc.) and collaborators (Diana Hernández, Yutong Si, Farzana Khan, MPH, etc.) who put in the hard work to make this all possible. You’re the real stars! What we did: Poorly maintained building envelopes increase greenhouse gas emissions and affect quality of life. We decided to combat this by combining robotics and AI to drastically improve building envelope (especially rooftop) inspections for energy-related defects. Our AI & Robotic system already scanned and analyzed 27 buildings, covering over 600,000 sqft of rooftops (all within a couple of months!). What's next: Check out our start-up that's taking this project to the next level: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gprb2bNN Feel free to reach out if you’re interested in collaborating!

Just returned from an exciting time in D.C. to participate in the National Science Foundation (NSF) #CIVIC closing event for the 2022 cohort. It was an inspiring time learning about other Stage 2 projects making an impact across the country to boost climate and environmental resilience. While we continue making progress on Orlando's REACH hub (https://lnkd.in/e6E6Hu2Q), we enjoyed sharing what we have learned along the way with so many Stage 1 teams eager to get started on their new projects. Many thanks to City of Orlando's Mike Hess, and my dedicated partners who could join in D.C., L. Trenton S. Marsh, Ph.D. and Alexandra Silio, for helping to showcase our hub research thus far. Thanks also to MetroLab Network for organizing a great event, and Reginald Parks, Jr., MBA's team at Reality Marketing Group for putting together this great video summary of our project thus far - displayed on the BIG screen for the first time yesterday! And that’s a wrap after a flurry of convening for @MetroLabNetwork this week. It’s only possible because of the incredible team of people I get to work with. Thank you so much to Stefania Di Mauro-Nava, PMP, Rose Mische Commins, Aaron O'Brien Mackisey and Nitisha Tripathi for all of your work not only this week, but for the months of commitment to making our 2024 summit and the first Center of Excellence on New Mobility and Automated Vehicles in-person workshop come together.
