Suspended overhead, Vibia ARRAY emits a pleasant downlight projected from an invisible source concealed within the lower ring. At the same time, indirect light washes upwards in a gradient of color, enveloping rather than invading the space it occupies. #sponsored https://lnkd.in/eZZFuK9F

Design the Future.
About us
DESIGN THE FUTURE METROPOLIS has its finger on the pulse of what’s next in architecture and interior design. Every day, we feature projects, publish insights, create resources, and organize events to keep you connected to the future of design. For more than four decades, we have been committed to a sustainable, just, and nurturing built environment. We dedicated an issue to sustainability in September 1996, were the first to report the connection between architecture and climate change in October 2003, and addressed interior design’s carbon emissions in our November/December 2020 issue. In 2021, METROPOLIS was instrumental in launching the Interior Design Pledge for Positive Impact, and spearheaded the creation of the Climate Toolkit for Interior Design. We never lose sight of the biggest goals for architecture and design: Making people’s lives better and safeguarding life on this planet.

Discover seven products that represent a new wave of bio-derived offerings for interior design and architecture. What if the materials of the building industry weren’t sourced from mining and extraction, but rather from agriculture and animal husbandry? This dream—that we could someday grow our building products—is represented by offerings from Koukos de Lab, Normann Copenhagen, Model No. Furniture, Ege Carpets, Lingrove, Mater, Spinneybeck, and FilzFelt. Some bring ancient materials back into vogue, while others utilize the properties of hemp and eelgrass. https://lnkd.in/drPgfgYd

OUR FALL 2024 ISSUE IS OUT! Unconventional architectural materials often go through boom-and-doom cycles. They capture our imagination with their potential for positive impact, but then we fail their promise when we try to bend age-old materials to fit present-day codes, worker skills, and lifestyles. Instead, how can we follow the lead of Indigenous communities and allow the synthesis of material and methodology? Abeer Seikaly weaves nomadic architecture with new technologies Equipo de Arquitectura practices material sincerity with mud and brick TAKK is rethinking the template of material convention Jaxson Stone, in “Adobe Is Political,” underlines the pitfalls of romanticizing a construction method while disavowing its context and community. Ayers Saint Gross adds a new addition to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Jones Studio and Aaron Betsky discuss a former Abbey as an armature from the past to the future. And lots more! Archtober 2024: Tracing the Future, taking place October 1–30 in New York City, aims to create a roadmap for how our living spaces will evolve. Archtober is an expanding initiative led by the AIA New York | Center for Architecture in New York City since 2011. Archtober 2024: Tracing the Future aims to create a roadmap for how our living spaces will evolve. The festival’s programming will address critical issues such as accessibility, equity in public buildings, and the need for affordable and creative solutions to the housing crisis. While New York City’s influence on the future of American and global cities is unparalleled, the festival encourages us to rethink and reimagine possibilities across scales and communities. The event includes a whole series of visits to renowned buildings and projects. https://lnkd.in/egzkYP5S

Kengo Kuma Designs a Sculptural Addition to Lisbon’s Centro de Arte Moderna. When the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon launched an invited competition in 2019 to refurbish and expand its Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM), all the participating firms proposed extending the 1983 Leslie Martin–designed building. All except Kengo Kuma, that is. His eponymous Tokyo-based firm, KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES (KKAA), proposed going underground instead. Given the modern art gallery’s location, in the foundation’s 8.13-hectare park, which is beloved by locals for its multitude of leafy pathways, framed views, water features, lawns and hidden nooks and crannies. Out of the 12 proposals submitted, KKAA’s design consumed less precious green space. https://lnkd.in/erAzcR6T

Shannon Goodman is Helping Make Material Reuse the Norm. The former Perkins&Will architect and executive director of the LIFECYCLE BUILDING CENTER is part of a community that is breaking systemic barriers and keeping reusable materials out of landfills. In 2009 architect Shannon Goodman was involved in a firmwide sustainability initiative at Perkins&Will’s Atlanta office, where she helped educate colleagues and clients on green building rating systems, material health, and civic policies. Goodman had worked at several smaller studios after earning her M.Arch from the Georgia Institute of Technology, but at Perkins&Will her eyes were newly open to the inextricable links between natural and built environments. “I got very inspired and interested. I was just like a sponge,” says Goodman. https://lnkd.in/eNBXRMJH
