The Increasing Importance (and newsworthiness) of Security and Risk Vetting In the last couple of weeks, vetting of prospective parliamentary candidates has been a hot topic in the media with political figures embarrassed as the result of flawed processes and, arguably, assumptions rather than proof. Regardless of the specific narratives, one thing has become crystal clear: a proactive and thorough security and risk vetting process is now essential. A Multi-Faceted Approach to Vetting Vetting and due diligence for both individuals and organisations is not a straightforward task that can be performed solely by an amateur armed with a keyboard and an internet connection. Getting vetting ‘right’, requires a comprehensive, methodologically driven, approach that combines the expertise of experienced researchers with modern technology and access to global data sources. The vetting process is more than a search engine name check and involves multiple layers of checks and assessments, ensuring that every angle is covered. A crucial aspect of vetting is the level of responsibility it entails. It is a two-way street, requiring cooperation and transparency from the person or organisation being vetted. Researchers must meticulously evaluate risks from both the client's and the subject's perspectives. They must then plan and execute their assessments using reliable methods and sources. Social media platforms, for instance, offer a wealth of information that can be both beneficial and detrimental, depending on how it is used or understood. Prudence and accuracy are paramount because even a single missed or misconstrued post could lead to significant negative consequences for all, as recent cases have shown. Beyond the Decision-Making Process It is important to note that vetting consultants are not the final decision-makers. Their role is to provide guidance and insights based on their findings. The ultimate decision usually rests with a representative of the organisation who interacts directly with the subject. Vetting is also not a one-time process; it should continue beyond the initial appointment and be revisited periodically. Factors such as risk appetite, social influences, work attitude, personal challenges, substance misuse, external manipulation, financial integrity, and the potential for disruption in case of promotion are all critical considerations. These factors underscore the need for continuous vigilance and caution. In conclusion, the importance of a robust vetting process cannot be overstated. It is a critical factor that affects the safety, integrity, and success of both individuals and organisations in today’s interconnected world. The Ideal Solution for Comprehensive Vetting The combination of traditional vetting methods and advanced AI tools represents an ideal solution for thorough and reliable security and risk assessment. • Robust, efficient and sensitive employee and contractor vetting is an essential tool to combat sharply rising insider threats to critical national infrastructure and other sensitive organisations. The recent article by Patricia Dreghorn, CEO of the UKSV Vetting Service, is a timely reminder of the challenges UKSV and the wider vetting industry face. When she assumed responsibility back in 2021, there was considerable criticism of UKSV. Poor service, difficulties in handling diversity and the outdated IT were frequent complaints. However, Patricia and her team have delivered a marked turnaround in UKSV operations. Tackling long term under-resourcing and legacy IT issues to deliver a modern digitally enabled service. Private sector vetting firms now need to match the service and performance improvements delivered by UKSV. MHG Corporate Risks, a part of GSA Global, offers its high-end clients exceptional  private vetting services. MHG has always strived to make best use of advancing technology to accelerate and enhance vetting, while using its exceptional team to add value to digital identity checks and automated processes. At MHG we provide a responsive high-quality service that enables the timely onboarding of new staff and contractors, and re-vetting existing staff or contractors for those organisations that do not require full UKSV vetting. We also provide due diligence and Intelligence gathering services for firms and investors contracting with and/or investing in suppliers, customers, business partners and other organisations. MHG due diligence enables top management to make fully informed judgements on critical business development and investment decisions.   #vetting #duediligence

  • I write a lot about vetting and effective security screening as a way of protecting organisations from insider risk and a means of mitigating the threat to their operations which can arise as a result of fraudulent activity. It’s important for every organisation large and small to know and understand the people who work for it. What I am currently focused on, and the subject of my latest blog post, is the opportunity for organisations to use enhanced security screening as a way to protect themselves from the existential legal risk presented by a ‘failure to prevent fraud’, the need for which is enshrined in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. • Yesterday saw the start of The Security Event (TSE) at the NEC in Birmingham. This is an excellent opportunity to tackle real security issues and problems facing both private and corporate customers. For organisations in all sectors however, there is one real and significant threat that often slips under the radar until it manifests itself as a problem: often too late for anything other than reactive action. I mention, the risks associated with employees. This is where effective employment and contractor vetting is critical; security screening both pre-engagement and on an ongoing basis, that grows and magnifies with both the organisation and the individual. • The importance of background checking for employment Most of you will have seen the stories which have appeared in the last 24 hours regarding individuals whom, it is alleged, may have been compromised by a foreign power. In an era marked by complex global challenges and intricate policy demands, the integrity of individuals appointed to positions of national importance has never been more critical. Follow this link to read why pre-employment screening and security clearance checks are so important for government and business alike. https://lnkd.in/efCcVfG4 #vetting #employeevetting #screening #security #gsa #protection

  • This week our Founder Michael Handley, was lucky enough to be invited to attend two significant closed meetings to hear the thoughts of two highly experienced, respected and influential figures in the UK Security arena. They both talked about the current risk of ‘Insider Threat’ and gave their perspectives on how it has the potential to cause significant harm to both individual & State organisations. You will doubtless have seen in the media that there have recently been incidents related to insider risk and threat involving court actions along with some allegations affecting the country’s political class which are currently receiving an airing in the press and on television. It is fair to say that, if you care to look, the risk attached to insider threat is omnipresent and no organisation is immune from it. As both speakers stated, and as our own company’s experience would support, there is no doubt that it is a rising and widely prevalent problem involving not only lone actors with grievance in mind, but also staff being deliberately targeted - either through their weakness, their greed or simple naivety - or planted in an organisation in seemingly trusted positions to be later used for gain or other motivation. Regardless of the causation, the potential negative impact of insider threat on any organisation should be clear to see. It is a situation which clearly highlights the need to ensure all staff, both incoming and those already in situ, are correctly and diligently security vetted. Not taking action is akin to leaving your house keys in the front door, the door open and the family silver on display. And while this might be a slight exaggeration, the reality is the impact on your business of not having properly vetted staff could be the same as leaving your home unlocked, the potential losses are immense. If you want to know more, email executive@mhgcorporate.com to find out how you could defend your business against the potential consequences. #insider #insiderthreat #vetting #gsa #security #protection #risk
