  • As National Community Planning Month comes to an end, we’re sharing a final Key Planning project as part of our October Planning Month Spotlight series. Today’s project is the Center Transit-Oriented Development Master Plan in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Michael Baker International led a multidisciplinary team to help the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) develop a transit-oriented development (TOD) master plan for the Harrisburg Transportation Center (HTC) and surrounding blighted area. The plan involved a weeklong visioning process and design charrette, incorporating input from community and business leaders, commuters and neighborhood associations. The master plan aims to leverage the HTC as a multimodal asset, increase public transportation ridership, support sustainable redevelopment, enhance connectivity and create a pedestrian, bicycle and transit-friendly environment. • In response to the effects of Hurricane Helene, Bridge Practice colleagues from Michael Baker International’s Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, offices were given an emergency task order through our firm’s statewide bridge management contract with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to assess 1,331 bridges and culverts for potential storm damage. Michael Baker immediately mobilized over a dozen inspection teams to successfully complete the field work. Data management was accomplished efficiently to quickly clear unaffected structures and seamlessly generate work orders for structures needing repairs. Michael Baker leaders facilitated quick response closures to bridges at risk for localized failures due to storm damage, even providing interim support to protect the public, while SCDOT staff managed detours and closures for other roadway washouts, tree removal and hazardous conditions such as downed power lines. The structure locations were widespread, located in both urban and rural areas, including rocky, mountainous terrain, piedmont and river basin sandflat regions, and everything in between. Many locations were remote with very limited access and required special access equipment in some cases. Thanks to our colleagues’ rapid response in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, our client can move forward with recovery efforts for impacted communities. #BridgeAssessment #EmergencyManagement #RapidResponse #InfrastructureRecovery
