Big things are happening at Ralph Wilson Park in Buffalo! This past weekend, the pedestrian bridge designed by schlaich bergermann partner sbp was successfully installed on site. The bridge, which will create an inviting and accessible gateway to the park and reconnect Buffalo to its waterfront, marks the first big milestone for the project. The site's shoreline is also taking shape as the Inlet is currently being planted to establish four different plant communities. The Inlet has replaced 1,700 feet of the existing vertical bulkhead and created a protected area where about 3 acres of new wetland habitat will be established. More updates to come. We are excited to see internationally renowned Cree artist Kent Monkman selected for the first commission for the Lassonde Art Trail, a 4.2km-long outdoor art destination that will be weaved through the parks created by the Port Lands Flood Protection project.
The Lassonde Art Trail (LAT) announces Kent Monkman as the first commissioned artist to contribute a major permanent artwork. Monkman will realize his first ever public sculpture for the Lassonde Art Trail (LAT), a new innovative outdoor art destination. On pace to launch in 2026, the Art Trail will unfold over 4.2km of walking paths within a massive new public waterfront park system overlooking Lake Ontario in Toronto’s Port Lands. “I’m honoured to have been asked to be part of this project. Given the importance of water to us as Cree people, all Indigenous people—really everyone—it means a great deal to me to create an artwork that will live on the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto, where I have lived and worked for over three decades,” said Kent Monkman. “I want to create an artwork that sends a message to this city—which is home to people from many diverse backgrounds from all over the world—referencing, in a playful way, the many layers of Indigenous presence here.” Photograph of Monkman on the Cherry Street South Bridge by Vid Ingelevics & Ryan Walker

MVVA is excited to announce that we have been selected to lead the Poudre River Restoration Initiative (PRRI) Master Plan in collaboration with Inter-Fluve and the City of Greeley, CO. The project aims to transform the narrowed and channelized Cache La Poudre River into a vital community resource and economic driver by reestablishing a natural channel shape and structure, lengthening the watercourse, and reconnecting it with the city. The PRRI is dedicated to rebuilding the health and habitat value of the river while protecting city infrastructure and providing enhanced access to the water.

“This addition to Gathering Place will be one of the only places in Tulsa that invites people to explore the Arkansas River’s edge. It begins to shift the city’s relationship to the river, once a treacherous boundary. Williams Crossing is a significant step closer to a trail-connected chain of community assets like Gathering Place, Turkey Mountain, River West Festival Park, and Helmerich Park,” shared MVVA partner Gullivar Shepard. Find the newly opened Williams Crossing pedestrian bridge in the The New York Times Fall Preview from Christopher Hawthorne! "Van Valkenburgh’s office is already well known in Tulsa for its work on the hugely popular Gathering Place, a 66-acre park on the east bank of the Arkansas River that opened in 2018. The new bridge, its 11 arches built of weathering steel, will connect the Gathering Place with the west bank while tying into the larger Midland Valley Trails network. It also seems likely to solidify Tulsa’s spot on the shortlist of American cities worth visiting for the design ambition of their civic infrastructure." https://lnkd.in/eK76nbEM

We couldn't be more excited! Williams Crossing in Tulsa, Oklahoma is now officially open to the public. The festivities kicked off last Friday with a #BigDamParty for the community hosted by Gathering Place to celebrate the grand opening of the transformed Zink Dam and Arkansas River waterfront. Designed by #sbp, this new symbol for Tulsa provides pedestrian and cycle connections to Gathering Place, an immense park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. sbp and MVVA collaborated closely on the design of the bridge to integrate it into the park landscape for a seamless user experience between the east and west banks of the river. The deck-stiffened, plate-arch structure is the first of its kind in the US and the bridge is also the first multi-span, plate-arch bridge built in the country. Thank you to our friends and partners at #MVVA & Crossland Construction Company, Inc., Domingo Gonzalez Associates and Hillsdale Fabricators for the great collaboration! #sbpbridges #WilliamsCrossing Read more → https://loom.ly/3chRTyU Images: High Caliber Captures, LLC

Williams Crossing, Zink Lake, and Tulsa Wave Park are officially open! The City of Tulsa celebrated the new landmark this Labor Day weekend, which connects Gathering Place with the River Parks and Midland Valley Trails to link 16 miles of cycling and pedestrian paths on either side of the Arkansas River. MVVA collaborated with schlaich bergermann partner sbp on the 1,440-foot-long, 18-foot-wide bridge deck to seamlessly integrate it into the experience of the Gathering Place landscape and to make an elegant, unique structure for the city. Two more pieces of infrastructure will define a new public interface with the river, including a reconstructed dam that forms Zink Lake to enhance fish habitat and moderate currents, and a 1,100-foot-long whitewater course for kayaking, surfing, and rafting designed by McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group. An additional 5.5 acres of parkland are also being added to Gathering Place's riverfront. Images courtesy of Gathering Place and High Caliber Captures.
