About us

Michigan Sugar Company was founded in 1906 when six smaller sugar companies merged their operations. In 2002, Michigan Sugar Company became a grower-owned cooperative and in 2004, we merged with Monitor Sugar Company to form the company that exists today. Michigan Sugar Company is headquartered in Bay City and we have sugarbeet processing facilities in Bay City, Caro, Croswell and Sebewaing, Michigan. Our nearly 900 grower-owners plant and harvest up to 160,000 acres of sugarbeets each year in 20 Michigan counties, as well as Ontario, Canada. Those beets are sliced at our factories and turned into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar annually. Our sugar is sold to industrial, commercial and retail customers under the Pioneer and Big Chief brands. We also package sugar for more than 20 private labels, including for customers like Walmart, Meijer and Kroger. Michigan Sugar Company has 930 year-round employees and an additional 1,100 seasonal workers. We are the No. 1 employer in Huron County, the No. 2 employer in Bay and Sanilac counties and the No. 3 employer in Tuscola County. Our annual payroll is about $65 million and our annual local economic impact is about $500 million. Michigan Sugar Company is the third largest of nine sugarbeet processing companies in the United States and Michigan is one of 10 states where sugarbeets are grown in the country.

  • VETERAN OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Andy Barnett, Michigan Sugar Company’s Veteran of the Month for February 2025. A native of Carrollton, Andy graduated from Eisenhower High School (now Heritage High School) in Saginaw Township in 1984. Following graduation and continuing his family's tradition of service, Andy enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was one of only five recruits in his class to score a perfect 30 out of 30 on his end-of-cycle test. Following basic training, Andy served as a food service specialist for two years as part of 94 Bravo at Seneca Army Depot in Upstate New York. When asked what drew him to the job, Andy responded with a wink and a smile saying, "The Army was facing a shortage of cooks at the time, so there was a need to fill. Plus, the signing bonus was the largest at the time.” Following his time in the Army, Andy joined the Michigan Sugar family in 1989 as a Sweeper and Flumer at the Carrollton factory, which is now a packaging and warehousing facility. Following the site’s closure in 2005, he worked for several companies in the Great Lakes Bay Region as a CDL driver before rejoining Michigan Sugar in 2009 as a Sugar Packer in Caro, where he still works today as a Silo Attendant. Andy currently lives in Caro with his wife of 22 years, Becky. They have three adult children - Felicia, Amanda, and Andrew, Jr., and four grandchildren - Jaden, Damien, Isabelle, and Brycen. While the family has no pets, Andy describes himself as a “former scorpion and tarantula enthusiast.” In his spare time, Andy serves as founder and President of the Tall Boys 4-Wheeling Club, plays guitar and billiards (he's a self-described “nasty” pool player), and participates in many outdoor hobbies. He has the goal of snorkeling Pictured Rocks this summer. Most of all, he still loves cooking for his large Italian family. When asked if there was anything else Andy wanted to mention, he said, “It ain’t easy being Andy, but it’s a lot of fun.” Anyone who knows Andy knows that statement perfectly captures his enthusiastic outlook on life. Congratulations, Andy, on being named Veteran of the Month. We thank you for your service to our country and cooperative.
