Preserving and managing a regional greenbelt of 65,000 acres of public open space in the Santa Cruz Mountain region
About us
Founded in 1972 by voter initiative, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District preserves and manages a regional greenbelt system in the San Francisco Bay Area, that includes parts of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a small portion of Santa Cruz county. It is one of California’s largest urban regional open space districts with nearly 65,000 acres, 26 preserves and more than 225 miles of trails. Midpen protects over 70 rare native species and critical habitats like waterways and redwood forests. Over 2 million visits are made annually to its regional preserves. Of Midpen's 26 preserves, 24 are open to the public free of charge, 365 days a year from dawn until one-half hour after sunset. Midpen's mission is to acquire and preserve a regional greenbelt of open space and agricultural land of regional significance in perpetuity, protect and restore the natural environment and provide opportunities for ecologically-sensitive public enjoyment and education. ------------------------------------------- Midpen is a single-purpose, independent special district. Opening up new trails takes a village! Throughout the month, we're shining a spotlight on some of the amazing Midpen staff who worked hard behind the scenes to open these trails to the public. Up next, we have Senior Capital Project Manager, Zachary Alexander. Zachary helped manage the capital improvements to the trails, ensuring the increased foot (and vehicle) traffic in the area doesn't degrade the health of the land. 📸: Zachary Alexander, Alisha Laborico, The Jesuit Archives and Research Center, and the Los Gatos Library, Novitiate Collection

Remember last year when biologists confirmed that the Santa Cruz kangaroo rat is living in Midpen’s Sierra Azul Preserve after the species hadn’t been seen in Santa Clara County for almost 100 years? Well, the discovery was just the beginning of Midpen's work to support Santa Cruz kangaroo rats in the area. Midpen launched a research project to better understand how to adjust our projects to benefit the species and recently applied some of that knowledge to the creation of a fuel break at Sierra Azul Preserve.
