𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 From the ground, an aurora is stunning. From space, it’s otherworldly in its beauty. Unfortunately, most Earthlings won’t have the opportunity to view the celestial light show from space. But ensuring we don’t feel too left out, NASA Astronaut and U.S. Navy Commander Matthew Dominick shared a timelapse the October 7-8 aurora from his perspective. Dominick is currently onboard the International Space Station and captured the video from the window of the Dragon Endeavour, which is currently docked on the ISS. ✨ 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ✨ 𝐑𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐨 (1916–2013) Ruth Rogan Benerito was an American chemist and pioneer in bioproducts. Benerito is credited with saving the cotton industry in post-WWII America through her discovery of a process to produce wrinkle-free, stain-free, and flame-resistant cotton fabrics. In addition to this work, Benerito also developed a method to harvest fats from seeds for use in intravenous feeding of medical patients. This system became the foundation for the system we use today. After retiring from the USDA and teaching university courses for an additional eleven years, Benerito received the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award both for her contributions to the textile industry and her commitment to education. 𝐈𝐧 𝟏𝟗𝟐𝟖, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 ‘𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐣𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐞’ 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 Although penicillin was discovered on September 28, 1928 by Andrew Fleming, a British physician and professor of bacteriology at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, it took fourteen years for the first civilian patient to receive treatment. In the decades since, it has been estimated that penicillin has saved more than 500 million lives. But word of Fleming’s discovery was slow to spread, the therapeutic implications weren’t entirely clear, and penicillin turned out to be quite difficult to manufacture. Fleming, who admittedly discovered penicillin by chance, is reported to have said, “When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I guess that was exactly what I did.” Continue Reading Here: https://lnkd.in/gzUGxkft #Science #History #MIDSCI 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦: 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦

𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸? 💡 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧. The first footprints put on the moon will probably be there a long, long time — maybe almost as long as the moon itself lasts. Unlike on Earth, there is no erosion by wind or water on the moon because it has no atmosphere and all the water on the surface is frozen as ice. Also, there is no volcanic activity on the moon to change the lunar surface features. Nothing gets washed away, and nothing gets folded back inside. However, the Moon is exposed to bombardment by meteorites, which change the surface. One little spacerock could easily wipe out a footprint on the moon. And since the Moon has no atmosphere, it is exposed to the solar wind, a stream of charged particles coming from the sun, and over time this acts almost like weather on Earth to scour surfaces on the moon, but the process is very, very slow.
