Did you know that the term "salary" comes from the Latin word "salarium," which was a payment made to Roman soldiers for the purchase of salt? Salt was a valuable commodity in ancient times and was used not only for flavoring food but also as a preservative. So, when you receive your salary today, you're continuing a tradition that dates back thousands of years! #FunFactFriday

Gerry Bolden knows building—after 30 years as a union carpenter, he took the leap into business ownership in 2019 by starting Bolden Construction Services with his wife, LaKisha, and her aunt, Pennie Brown. Navigating this "new world" of business, Gerry and Pennie attended Midwest BankCentre’s Small Business Academy, a program designed to help small business owners “think like a banker” and gain access to capital. With determination and a line of credit from the Bank, Bolden Construction is growing and recently completed work on Washington University’s new neuroscience building. Their vision? To become developers in East St. Louis, where Gerry grew up, and give back to the community that shaped him. As Gerry says, “God gave me a vision a long time ago... that I’d be back in East St. Louis helping to rebuild the community.” We are proud to support Bolden Construction as they build their business, their dreams, and a stronger community.
