We're proud to launch our new film telling Mighty Earth's story of how we deploy our "perfect storm" campaign approach to stop the destruction of nature and shift whole industries to adopt sustainable practices. We use several strategies, from satellite monitoring to pinpoint deforestation in supply chains to scrutinising companies to see if they're “greenwashing” their climate and ESG credentials. Our reports and investigations have revealed that many industries still don’t have control of their supply chains, allowing deforestation and human rights violations to seep in through direct and indirect suppliers. We work alongside Indigenous communities on the frontline of deforestation, amplifying their voices and seeking new platforms for their stories to be heard. "With the climate emergency and biodiversity loss intensifying , Spanish supermarkets must move from words to deeds and be part of the solution to save Brazil’s precious biomes from further destruction.” Mighty Earth's senior adviser for Spain, Isabel Fernández Cruz quoted in widespread coverage of our new report which for the first time found meat products on the shelves of Carrefour España, Mercadona, Lidl España, Grupo Dia, ALDI ESPAÑA, Alcampo and El Corte Ingles are likely linked to soy-driven deforestation in the Amazon and the Cerrado savannah in Brazil. Campaigns to transform the private sector can deliver Nature and climate action even as the Supreme Court obstructs the government's ability to do so. Put another way, the government may not be able to do its job, but the job still must be done. Despite their stranglehold over the courts, even the worst polluters and destroyers of Nature need customers, financing, and a social license to operate. We have found that these needs provide levers to transform industry. When the people who pay the bills raise questions about how a company can do a better job, executives listen. And the good news is that at least in some cases, investors, customers, and the media are knocking on a door that if not flung wide open to greet them, is at least ajar: a growing number of companies are staffed by people who want their enterprise to do good. Mighty Earth had some big successes in protecting forests and decarbonizing major industries through these approaches. As readers of this series know, campaigns on big agribusiness have reduced deforestation for palm oil, paper, and rubber 90%; won science-based decarbonization commitments from the biggest steel companies; and most recently sparked even some of the worst actors in the meat industry, a source of climate pollution bigger than even all transportation, to act to protect ecosystems in the supply chain, begin to tackle methane pollution, and boost sales of plant-based protein. Of course, these strategies did not begin with us. Indeed, markets campaigns have their origins as far back as the Boston Tea Party. More recently, when scientists tied the alarming hole in the ozone layer to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that were produced mostly by Dupont, campaigners persuaded the company to pledge that it would cease making them if the link were proven. When it was, Dupont agreed to phase them out – and urged the Reagan administration, skeptical as it was of environmental regulation, to support a global ban. That chain of events led to the Montreal Protocol and the restoration of the ozone layer. Even in this era, there is still a role for politics and government. Notwithstanding the Court’s efforts to hobble it, the Inflation Reduction Act is still driving trillions in investment in climate action. It is possible to imagine a vigorous political party one day delivering majorities that could upend the Court’s meddling. But we cannot wait for that happy day. Despite their long history of success, campaigns to reshape industry are underfunded. In our current reality, we need strategies that can deliver transformative change and soon, and scaling private sector action is an approach whose moment has very much arrived. I hope you will read and comment on the full essay...

Busted! For the first time a new Mighty Earth report reveals Spain’s seven biggest supermarkets are linked to widespread deforestation risk in Brazil. Our analysis found meat products on the shelves of Carrefour, Mercadona, Alcampo, Lidl España, El Corte Ingles, GRUPO DIA and ALDI ESPAÑA are likely linked to soy-driven deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado. Almost 4 million tons of soy were imported from Brazil into Spain last year, to feed animals in intensive farming systems, with the Spanish ports of Barcelona and Cartagena being central to the operations of global grain giants Bunge and Cargill With less than six months to go before the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), we’re calling on Spanish retailers to act with urgency to be part of the solution to save Brazil’s precious biomes from further destruction. On #WorldChocolateDay, Mighty Earth and over 100 civil society organisations are calling on chocolate companies to pay farmers a living income. Most cocoa farmers earn as little as $2 a day, or about a sixth of an average chocolate bar. Farmer poverty is the main driver of many issues in the industry, including deforestation and child labour. Chocolate and cocoa companies should: pay a living income, establish fair contracts and publicly report their progress. On #WorldChocolateDay it is crucial to highlight the need for traceability in the cocoa industry. If you can’t see where the cocoa comes from, you can’t know the conditions the cocoa is grown in, which means you can’t fix any problems that are there! The great news is that traceability has increased significantly because companies are being pushed by regulation from the EU. BUT, there’s still a large gap to full compliance to those regulations. POSCO, South Korea's leading steel manufacturer, plans to reline its coal-powered blast furnaces, extending coal-based steel production by 15-20 years. This decision is expected to generate over 199 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, posing a significant challenge to global decarbonization efforts. For months, local and global groups have urged POSCO to phase out coal or at least provide a clear transition plan. Unfortunately, there’s been no official response from POSCO, underscoring the need for external pressure to catalyze change. On June 2nd, a group of 19 civil society organizations from around the world sent letters to BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG and Volkswagen, urging the German automakers to address their use of #steel from POSCO and hold their steel supplier accountable to their stated decarbonization goals. By demanding transparent phase-out plans for coal facilities and refusing to purchase steel from high-emission suppliers, automakers can set a powerful precedent for cleaner supply chains and environmental stewardship. Their leadership in this space can push steel manufacturers like POSCO towards adopting more sustainable production methods. We stand with the groups in calling on BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen to align their supply chains with their climate commitments and drive the demand for sustainable steel. ➡ More info about POSCO: https://lnkd.in/gRFUze4e ➡ More info about blast furnace relining: https://lnkd.in/g68ZdPAS

We have some big news to share! Mighty Earth has published its groundbreaking Whistleblower complaints to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission against $3.2bn of JBS' fraudulent Net Zero-related 'Sustainability-Linked bonds'. A huge thanks to Kevin Galbraith and his team for their expert legal work and unstinting support! Our set of challenges against Brazilian beef giant JBS, initiated in January 2023, have drawn global attention to JBS' non-existent Net Zero by 2040 plans. Our legal submissions are especially relevant as the SEC assesses whether to green light JBS' controversial plan to list on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) - a deal we’ve described as one of “the biggest climate risk IPOs in history.” Through our initial Whistleblower complaint, we alerted the SEC to how JBS - the world's largest meat company, with climate emissions greater than Spain - misled investors with its unvalidated net zero plans and highlighted that they did not cover its 'Scope 3' supply chain emissions. According to JBS’ own admission, its Scope 3 emissions account for 97% of its total climate footprint. Office of the New York State Attorney General Letitia James seemingly agrees with our analysis to the SEC and recently sued JBS in the New York Supreme Court for making misleading, deceptive and fraudulent Net Zero by 2040 statements in relation to its beef sales. The lawsuit against JBS sheds light on the importance of transparency and accountability in sustainability claims. We must say no greenwashing in the meat industry. JBS, we’re looking at you. Indiana is currently the nation's largest steel producer, which means that decisionmakers could have the biggest impact on a sustainable steel market. Automobile manufacturers with factories in Indiana like, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis, and Subaru of America have pledged to achieve carbon neutrality in their supply chains. Indiana steel mills are powered by polluting fossil fuels with no credible plans to become sustainable. At the Burns Harbor plant in Porter County, corporate owner Cleveland-Cliffs must soon decide to either reline one of its blast furnaces or move quickly towards sustainable steel production. Sustainable mills can reduce 95% of carbon emissions and toxic pollutants while preserving and creating new steel worker jobs. Re-lining Burns Harbor means keeping the coal-based blast furnace in operation until 2040, maintaining one of the nation's worst toxic polluters, and putting jobs at risk. Indiana must take advantage of this industrial transformation and act now to ensure its continued leadership in steelmaking. The number of steel jobs in Indiana has already been halved since 1990. If Indiana commits to building sustainable steel mills here, we can ensure that our 28,000 steelworkers have good union jobs while creating new ones.
