Helping law firm owners grow wildly profitable firms | Trial lawyer & Founder of The Mike Morse Law Firm | Over $1.5B recovered for our clients | Keynote Speaker | Best-Selling Author | CEO of FIREPROOF

My speaking schedule this year has been a lot. I'm in the middle of a crazy 6-week stretch: 1. PIMCon in Arizona last month 2. Fireproof Summit last week in Scottsdale 3. Trial Lawyers University this week in Las Vegas 4. A keynote for Lawyers.com next week 5. Back to Phoenix on Halloween for the Business of Law.     (Message me if you'd like discounted tickets for these last two.) Why do all this speaking? Well, I do like hearing myself talk... But that’s not why. The biggest reason is that I love sharing our Fireproof Performance methods with as many people as I can. l also just like conferences because I want to be around growth-minded people who are always learning, always trying to get better. R Rex Parris is one of those people, and I had a great time catching up with him over dinner a couple nights ago here at TLU.  I also spent 3 hours yesterday listening to Sach Oliver and Joe Fried ★★★★★ deliver an excellent talk about speed trials and depositions. If you’re here for TLU, I’m speaking Saturday. Come say hi. I’d love to hear what you’re working on. Are you in Vegas this week?

When I joined this firm, my first assignment was getting an insurance claim approved. Our building burned down in 2008, and the insurance company wanted proof that the fire had disrupted our business. They wanted the numbers showing how the fire had adversely impacted the firm's revenue. When I asked Mike what our revenue would be, he responded the way most lawyers would, saying it couldn't be done. How could he predict his law firm's revenue when he didn't know: • how long it would take to resolve a given case; or • how much a given case might settle for? After 20+ years working with immense amounts of data in the auto industry, I told Michael that even though each case was different, we could use the case data from previous years to identify patterns in the timing and amount of settlements. I used that data to build a model projecting how much the firm was on track to make that year before the fire and how far we fell short due to the fire. The model showed a shortfall of about $270,000. The insurance company approved and paid our claim. That was the first time the Mike Morse Law Firm used data to solve an important problem. I then used that same core model to create a revenue forecast for the following year. Now, I send out projections every January predicting how much revenue the firm will collect from settlements and verdicts over the next 12 months. For 15 of my 16 years with the firm, our projections have been within 1% of that year's revenue. Michael quickly became a believer in data-driven decision-making. As we say, it's not magic. It's math. I love talking about this stuff, even when it's on stage like at the Fireproof Summit last week. If you have any questions about how to predict revenue or use data better in your law firm, drop them in the comments or message me. I'll do my best to answer. Does your business struggle with using data?

I used to think I was the world’s best multitasker. That’s BS. There’s no such thing as multitasking. I was just busy. But I wasn't focused on the right stuff for the Mike Morse Law Firm. A law firm owner knows that the firm always has fires to be put out. And if you're like me, you get 100 ideas a day and see shiny objects everywhere (new business ventures, tech tools, iPhone notifications). Warren Buffett wrote, "The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything." Saying no to almost everything lets you say yes to the most important things for your firm, your team, your family, and yourself. That's why times like our Fireproof Summit last week are so important. The summit gave 50 firm owners and team members the chance to put the phones away and focus. They could work ON their businesses rather than IN their businesses. If your law firm doesn't have clear key metrics that you're hitting consistently, your only focus should be on improving your firm. You need to dial in: • your core values • your intake process • your training • how you coach your team • your Jumbotron (the data that drives your firm's decision-making). John Nachazel and I wrote Fireproof to help other law firm owners build thriving, growing law firms that can run without them. It's hard to do, but it's possible. But you need to focus. As I said in an email to our Fireproof clients ahead of the Summit: Tell your offices and loved ones that you'll be disconnected during the Summit. It is time to focus.  Focus on your law firms.  Everything else can wait. That's how you and your firm become fireproof. Have you found ways to focus on what's most important for your firm?
