Today, Military Sealift Command celebrates its 75th Anniversary. On Oct. 1, 1949, Rear Adm. William M. Callaghan stood up the Military Sea Transportation Service as a single managing agency for the Department of Defense’s ocean transportation needs. Years later, MSTS would become Military Sealift Command, and over the decades, MSC has played an invaluable role – from the seas – in every major conflict and challenge our nation has faced. Our legacy is forged by the will, determination and courage of the hundreds and thousands of civil service mariners, federal civilians and military members who have committed their lives to delivering timely logistic and special mission support to our warfighters around the world – even in harm’s way, and the many staff members who have supported them from ashore. Salute to the premier maritime logistics provider and 75 more years of maritime excellence. #75yearsofmaritimeexcellence #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail #TogetherWeDeliver

Today, General Dynamics NASSCO christened and launched the USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209), the fifth ship in the fleet oiler program for the U.S. Navy, on September 21. Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Carlos Del Toro served as the principal speaker at the ceremony, with additional remarks from NASSCO president, Dave Carver, and other Navy representatives. Following remarks, co-sponsors Alicia L. Aadnesen and Deborah D. Simmons christened the ship with the traditional champagne bottle break alongside the hull. 🍾 “What we christen today is not just a ship,” said David Carver, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “The USNS Lucy Stone is the embodiment of American unity and purpose – a beacon of freedom that will carry Lucy Stone’s legacy, and the legacy of America, all over the world.” You can read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gaPFbyUu

This week’s Military Sealift Command “Ship in the Spotlight” is USNS Pecos (T-AO 197) returns from extended operations this month. The Henry J. Kaiser-class fleet replenishment oiler entered into its last operational period September 2023 and has operated non-stop for 12 months. Operating in the Commander, U.S. Third Fleet area of responsibility, the crew of civil service mariners steamed thousands of nautical miles as the sole combat support vessel for the Southern California operation area. Pecos also operated in the Hawaiian operation area during the Rim of the Pacific exercise. In total, the ship provided 33 underway replenishments with U.S. Navy and coalition ships from Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Mexico, Indonesia, Singapore, Chile, India, France, and Holland/Netherlands, transferring more than 12 million gallons of fuel and 287 pallets of critical cargo and supplies. Pecos ’stellar performance is the reason why Military Sealift Command’s Combat Logistics Fleet has maintained its 75-year reputation as the supply line for sustained operations at sea. 💪🚢⚓️ #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail #TogetherWeDeliver #75yearsofmaritimeexcellence
