The only national news organization in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to mental health.
About us
A long-festering mental health crisis has been building in the United States for many years, created by a fractured health and mental health system, a pattern of discrimination and bias against communities of color and other disadvantaged groups, and a historic and profoundly damaging trend of criminalizing mental illness. The failure to bring to scale effective prevention, early intervention and treatment programs has left millions of people struggling without the services that could help them. These problems exploded during the pandemic, with dramatic impact on the most vulnerable groups. It is the mission of MindSite News, a nonprofit digital publication that launched in late 2021, to cover this terrain and amplify awareness of these issues by the public and policymakers. As the only news site dedicated exclusively to reporting on mental health, we focus our work in two vital areas: 1) Investigating and exposing the failings and flaws of our fractured mental health system. 2) Bringing to light innovative solutions that have the potential to address these issues and bring effective programs and policies to scale. The mental health crisis in the U.S. has been unfolding at a time when newspapers and other media are downsizing, eliminating journalism jobs. MindSite New is helping to fill this void by creating a national vehicle for rigorous, in-depth reporting on mental health, bringing focus, expertise and deep journalistic experience to an area of growing public interest and concern.

"It was a collective fear," says Flor Ramirez, recalling the time when her family lived with the constant threat of deportation. “My biggest fear was that my children would be separated.” As a community navigator with Arise Chicago, Flor now fights for immigrant workers’ rights, helping them understand their protections and empowering them to stand up against workplace injustices. Through her own experience, Flor provides crucial support for others facing similar fears and vulnerabilities. Just two days after Donald Trump was elected president in Nov. 2016, mental health advocates in Chicago gathered to discuss concerns about the election’s impact on immigrants’ mental health. Fast forward eight years, and those fears are exploding all over again. This story is part two of Silent Battles, our new reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S with palabra. by NAHJ. This series was made possible with support from The Field Foundation of Illinois.

Earlier this month, the Chicago bureau of MindSite News and palabra released a new series, Silent Battles, a reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S. We begin in Chicago, a city founded by a Haitian immigrant that has the fourth-largest immigrant population in the country. In this video we hear from the reporter on the project, Alma Campos, and share a clip from Reimagining Mental Health Supports for Migrant Arrivals in Chicago, an initiative that trains shelter workers and other front-line staff on trauma-informed care. This series is made possible with funding from the Field Foundation of Illinois. https://buff.ly/4dNz8vV

Comments from our founder Rob Waters were featured in this recent opinion article from The Philadelphia Inquirer. The piece takes a look at Donald Trump’s stigmatizing language about mental illness throughout his campaign. “People with mental health conditions have been campaigning for years against the social stigma directed against them — and in recent years have made a lot of progress. Donald Trump seems to be on a one-man campaign to bring back that kind of stigma.” - Rob Waters, MindSite News founder

It has been a privilege to share stories like Maria Suares' and partner with palabra. by NAHJ on the series Silent Battles, which shines a light on immigrant mental health. Many who come to the United States have experienced trauma and often struggle to find help once here. Make sure to follow Maria Suares and her family and other migrants through their journey with the city of Chicago, community groups, and others as they try to work and find a safe haven in their new country in the first part of the Silent Battles series. This series was made possible with funding from The Field Foundation of Illinois. https://lnkd.in/gwAgsCa8
I had the privilege of spending a day with Maria Suares, photographing her for the first story in Silent Battles, a new reporting project that focuses on the mental health of immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeker communities in the United States. Suares is identified by part of her name to protect her identity. Despite the deep trauma she and her family have endured, they welcomed me warmly into their home and shared their painful stories. Suares and her family were forced to leave Venezuela and flee to neighboring Colombia. She recounted suffering a stroke after a highly stressful incident in their home in Maracay, Venezuela, and spent nearly two months recovering in a hospital. However, after settling in Bogotá, Colombia, street gangs began extorting them. In August 2023, the family embarked on a perilous journey to the U.S., crossing the Darién Gap and the Mexican border. I am deeply grateful to Yunuen Bonaparte for her incredible trust and support, as well as to editors Rob Waters and Diana Hembre. The second annual Treatment not Trauma summit was something of a victory celebration. Chicago’s mayor Brandon Johnson has committed to introducing mental health services into a vaccine clinic in Pilsen, a majority Latino neighborhood by the end of October, and to reopen the shuttered community mental health center in Roseland, a majority Black neighborhood on the South Side by the end of the year. At the end of September, police officers and the fire department are to be phased out of the CARE crisis response teams. “This is a huge triumph because in a time where we have been defunding public care, we were able to come back, create those public jobs and create spaces for care where it doesn’t matter if you have documents, doesn’t matter if you have insurance, it doesn’t matter if you can afford it, you’re going to be able to come in and get the care that you need,” Alderwoman Rodriguez-Sanchez told MindSite News at the summit. "I could NOT focus. I would catch myself looking around and not on the road, messing with the radio, just doing anything but paying attention to the road ahead of me." In this first person story, we hear from Hannah Henderson and how medication helped her to pay attention to the road while driving. This story is part of a package by Youthcast Media Group.

I was pleased to be asked by Philly Inquirer national columnist Will Bunch to comment on how the movement to eradicate mental health stigma is being set back by Donald Trump. Here's what I told him: “People with mental health conditions have been campaigning for years against the social stigma directed against them — and in recent years have made a lot of progress. Donald Trump seems to be on a one-man campaign to bring back that kind of stigma.” Read Will's terrific column here: https://lnkd.in/g8Vz5r6t #stopstigmatogether #mentalhealthamerica #nami

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, who crash vehicles at a higher rate of any age group. But hidden within the numbers is a critical but often overlooked subgroup: Teens with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – who are more than twice as likely to be involved in multiple car crashes.
