About us
On this page, we have conversations about research administration. When you leave this page, or finish a video, or watch a live – you will say to yourself, “that was about research administration.” If you are looking for any other topic other than Research Administration – you are probably in the wrong place. RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION IS MY JAM! While I have several specialties, my strength is my unique empathy centered approach to research administration. I believe, and practice a collaborative team approach to grants management, where RAs maintain and enforce compliance with faculty using collaboration, education, and integration as key elements. The goal is always to inform, empower, and counsel as opposed to the traditional administration and enforcement techniques.

So here's a question for you - how involved are you as an RA in closeouts? Depending on the nature of the relationship with the research administrator to other ancillary departments within the organization and how the onboarding and offboarding is managed, the RA's role in this could be light to very, very, very heavy. I've talked to RAs who are in the nitty gritty, and I've talked to RAs who handle only the financial part of it - I am curious to know - how do you do it in your org?

In this video we delve into the crucial yet often overlooked aspect of workload management for research administrators—the impact of managerial support. How often do managers unknowingly set their teams up for failure by not aligning their actions with their advice and setting their staff up for failure? For example, imagine a manager who tells a team member to maintain work-life balance but then require them to work late last minute on urgent tasks, are you truly supporting their success? This video explores the real-life scenarios that research administrators face and the foundational role managers play in either bolstering or hindering their team's effectiveness. We discuss practical steps that managers can take to ensure they're not just assigning tasks but also creating an environment where boundaries are respected and success is attainable. 👀 Watch the full video to gain insights on fostering a supportive and efficient work culture. Let's start a conversation about how we can better support our teams to thrive, not just survive! https://lnkd.in/eG6r-Zn7

One hallmark of our profession is the constant influx of requests that come at random. Imagine you're in a meeting with a few colleagues, and amidst the discussion, someone casually mentions a task they need you to handle without a follow-up email. Or perhaps while walking down a hallway, a quick exchange results in a request for an item, with no written record. Sometimes, you might open an email titled "cost transfer" only to find a vague request lacking essential details, leaving you to decipher what's needed. Our roles require us to adeptly manage, organize, collate, and prioritize these requests to ensure nothing slips through the cracks. In this video, I discuss strategies for setting boundaries and creating systematic approaches to how requests are made. By establishing clear guidelines on how information should be conveyed, you can significantly reduce the chances of overlooking tasks. This method not only prevents things from falling through the cracks but also ensures that others know exactly how to provide you with the information you need to effectively complete tasks. https://lnkd.in/eNzX4eA9

🌟 One of my favourite parts of NCURA: National Council of University Research Administrators is the regular webinars that they do with the collaborate committees (shameless plug!) 🌟 Last Monday we got together and talked about the evolving landscape of remote and hybrid work models in research administration. This is tough because a lot of organizations who dove into remote models are struggling with figuring out how to sustain it long term. Some of the key highlights we covered (or rather the panelists covered was) 🔗 Key Highlights: The impact of COVID-19 as a catalyst for permanent change in work policies and how we can continue to have engaging discussions on the adoption and implementation of remote and hybrid work models. Insightful survey results that outline current trends and administrator preferences. No surprise I am on the side of remote work. One of the sticking points I think for all of us, and this was a long part of the conversation was the importance of creating uniform, clear, and supportive remote work policies and that not everyone has those. It really felt to me, and I think to others as well, that having clarity around these roles and positions is critical to their success or failure. The depth of the discussions underscored how critical flexible work arrangements are for maintaining productivity and employee well-being in the ever-changing academic landscape. 🙌 A huge thank you to all the panelists for their invaluable contributions and to the organizers for a seamlessly executed event. You're amazing. Matthew Michener, Jason Park, Trisha Southergill, and the awesome moderators. For those who missed it, I highly recommend checking out the session recording to gain some fantastic insights that could help shape your institution's approach to remote work. https://lnkd.in/eWbeWcs4 #RemoteWork #HybridWork #ResearchAdministration #Webinar #ProfessionalDevelopment #COVID19 #FutureOfWork

If you’ve been relying on NIH Quick Queries to manage upcoming progress reports, there's news you need to know: Quick Queries have been retired. Many of us used the IPF number to stay on top of progress reports, but this option is no longer available. 🛑 This change means that unless you are a PI delegate or have the appropriate access to Commons, accessing progress report information will require more effort, adding an administrative burden as staff will need alternative ways to gather this information. What you can do: 👉 Reach Out to Your GMS: Contact your Grants Management Specialist (GMS) and express the value Quick Queries provided. If enough people communicate the importance of this tool, there’s a chance it could be reinstated. Remember, your GMS isn't the decision-maker but can be your voice to NIH leadership. 👉 Alternative Tracking: Use an Excel spreadsheet or calendar reminders to manage progress report timelines. Set flags for 90 days before the end of the budget period to start preparing for RPPR submissions. Inform your department administrators of upcoming dates and instruct them to monitor this information manually moving forward. https://lnkd.in/eGP9E-ax

If I had a dollar for every messy portfolio I’ve wrangled into compliance, I'd be retired! Sadly, this includes those crises I brought upon up myself. If you’ve been in this gig long enough, you know the drill—you'll stumble upon your own old mistakes, inherit portfolios that have been passed around like hot potatoes, or uncover grants that seem to have been forgotten by time itself. It can feel overwhelming, even with decades of experience. Sometimes I will look at a grant and be like, who can handle this mess? In my new series, I break down how I approach crisis portfolios that are messy and have been ignored for years, both the psychological aspects of it (OMG HOW DID THIS HAPPEN), and the tactical aspects - ah, this is the best spreadsheet for this solution. In this week's episode we start at the beginning - addressing the fear of what you will find. https://lnkd.in/ekXvyeTG
