Great work by Ankitha Kumar, Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation intern, presenting her research at the American College of Cardiology Annual Meeting in Chicago. Our study, "Heart Failure Care Teams Improve GDMT Utilization," highlights the importance of specialized heart failure care teams in improving the utilization of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT). Only 14% of heart failure patients were on optimal GDMT meds at 1 year after a new diagnosis of heart failure. GDMT utilization was significantly higher for patients managed by advanced practice providers and advanced heart failure cardiology teams compared to general cardiology and primary care. These findings underscore the need for increased access to heart failure focused care teams to improve patient outcomes.
