Congratulations to all the students and award winners from tonight's annual ceremony at the Royal Aeronautical Society, University of Hertfordshire. After the presentations Dr Lionel Wallace FRAeS DL delivered the Sir Geoffrey de Havilland Lecture on: "Airworthiness - Moths to Flying Cars." I would never have thought I would be so gripped by a talk on airworthiness....but I was tonight! It is just incredible how much the UK town of Hatfield has delivered to the global aviation industry....including; The de Havilland Dragon Rapide, Tiger Moth, Mosquito & Vampire. The world's first jet airliner the Comet, then the Trident and eventually the British Aerospace 125 & 146. And with these new aircraft came so many innovations that are vital to this day, such as the first autopilot, navigation systems, noise reduction engines, wind tunnels and much much more...it's a very long list and all these novel inventions had to be certified by the Aviation Authorities before they flew. Thank you to Lionel for bringing 100+ years of Hatfield aviation history to life this evening. After speaking with the talented & enthusiastic students who attended, Hatfield will continue to export aviation excellence to the world for another 100 years to come!
