We love an ingenious solution to food waste that's a win for the climate *and* communities facing hunger. So when our friends at Sharing Excess started a pioneering food rescue and redistribution program out of New York City’s Hunts Point Produce Market, the largest produce terminal market in the world, we couldn't wait to lend a hand. Misfits Market is thrilled to donate $200,000 to help Sharing Excess (one of our donation partners since 2019!) expand their operations at Hunts Point and distribute 10 million pounds of fresh, nutritious food to half a million New Yorkers in the year ahead. 🍏 Just before #nycclimateweek, we celebrated this next chapter of our partnership by giving away more than 10,000 pounds of food to the residents of Co-Op City in the Bronx. A huge thanks to everyone who came out, including Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), NYS State Senator Jamaal Bailey, NYS Assemblymember Michael Benedetto, and NYS Commissioner of Agriculture, Richard Ball, our very own Abhi Ramesh, and the Sharing Excess team led by Evan Ehlers. Watch to learn more, then visit our site to see how you can help improve food access just by shopping for groceries with us. https://lnkd.in/eqvApez2 #foodwaste #foodaccess #ClimateWeekNYC #HungerActionMonth

In our vision of a more sustainable food system, everyone has access to nutritious food and all food goes to its highest outcome. But that’s not yet reality in the U.S. One in seven people are food insecure in America, a stat that’s increased 30% in just the past year. At the same time, 33% of all food in the U.S.—78 million tons—went to waste or was lost in the fields in 2022 according to ReFED. It’s easy to get discouraged by those numbers, but we see it as an opportunity to tackle both problems at once—not just on #HungerActionDay but every day. We partner with more than 60 food banks and pantries and local food access organizations leading the work of serving and feeding our neighbors day in and day out. Over the past year, we’ve helped provide more than 1.5 million meals* to people facing hunger through our partnership with Feeding America. And in 2023, Misfits Market donated over 6 million pounds of food through our 60+ community partners around our facilities. To learn more about the amazing work of our partners and how you can fight hunger just by shopping with us, head to our new Food Access page: https://lnkd.in/eqvApez2 #HungerActionMonth *$1 helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks.

Nobody: Me: Ordering 10 bags of my latest product launch 😁 - introducing our exclusive Pipcorn Heirloom Snacks x Misfits Market Upcycled Savory Onion Twists! 🧅 At Misfits Market, cobranded product development falls under the #privatelabel team umbrella because the same amount of enthusiasm and dedication goes into these fun collaborations as we put into our entire Odds & Ends #ownedbrand. I’m thankful for Pipcorn’s partnership in the development and launch of this product and for their commitment to finding more ways to #upcycle the heirloom corn flour from their milling process (huge kudos to Joe DePetrillo, Matt Clevenger, Justin Lindenmayer + Jessie Kimsey for the intro!). Plus, I’m happy my son now asks for these as his preferred snack (over those certain MSG-laden onion ring snacks). More proof that as an industry we CAN launch delicious, high-quality products that are food waste-fighters by leveraging upcycled ingredients. ♻️ These twists and other food waste-fighting products can be found exclusively at www.misfitsmarket.com now! How many bags will you add to your box? 📦

One of the best parts of building a company from the ground up is that you get to design the team of your dreams from scratch. We make it a priority to invest in talent at every stage of their careers, which means inevitably we'd celebrate our very first retirement! Cheers to Jon Mckinley, who we toasted last week for his four years of creating scalable solutions in our IT department. Thank you for letting #MisfitsMarket be a part of the final chapter in such a wonderful career. Looking for your next big move? Founder & CEO at Misfits Market

We have celebrated many things over the past 5+ years at Misfits Market, but today was a first - we get to celebrate our first Misfits retirement! The biggest thank you in the world to Jon Mckinley for 4 years of incredible contributions to our company. Jon joined us in mid 2020. We were adding new team members every week, we had almost no IT infrastructure, and we were juggling Covid chaos. Jon moved quickly and deliberately (one of our core values at Misfits) to create scalable IT solutions across the organization - most of these are still intact today and serve as a foundation for technology at Misfits (including things like the Jonny Cart - our mobile warehouse management cart). Jon was never short on fun stories and life lessons. At his retirement party yesterday, he left us with a few more wise words: "Never try to lift up a cow by yourself, be careful of potholes when driving a motorcycle, and work at companies with kind people." 😁 Jon - as you move on to enjoy your well-deserved retirement, know that your legacy will continue to inspire us. Now it is finally thyme to relax! Thank you and happy retirement!

Good news travels fast! Check out this recap of another amazing Food Waste Solutions Summit organized by our friends at ReFED. They assembled the best and brightest in the industry, including our Head of Sustainability Rose Hartley, to share insights and reimagine food loss and waste reduction strategies both upstream and at the consumer level.

The ReFED Team has done it again! Last week’s #FoodWasteSolutionsSummit in Baltimore was reinvigorating and inspiring. Here are some of the standout moments, and personal highlights: 🔊 Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack announced the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics. This long-awaited strategy charts a course to the US commitment to reduce food loss and waste by 50% by 2030, including new investments. The strategy covers prevention of food loss, prevention of food waste, increasing organics recycling, and policy to incentivize all three areas. Read all about it here: https://shorturl.at/lfssC 💡 As always, Dana Gunders delivered an insightful, inspiring keynote address. She drew parallels between the growth of energy efficiency and our collective work in food loss and waste, emphasizing that rising demands can be mitigated by creating efficiency measures that help plateau consumption. 🗺 A food waste & loss “cheat sheet”! Eva Goulbourne of Littlefoot Ventures, in collaboration with FMI- The Food Industry Association, hosted a brainstorming and planning session for the Food Waste Reduction Alliance. Eva created a comprehensive "Cheat Sheet" detailing the primary stakeholders working to reduce food waste and loss in the U.S. and beyond. This is the sort of resource that I wish I had when I started in this field six years ago. 💡 Measurement -> Awareness -> Behavior Change. Harry Tannenbaum, founder of Mill, shared early findings showing that Mill customers are changing and improving not just their at-home waste habits, but their purchasing habits, e.g. purchasing fewer would-be-wasted foods. It's a great reminder that what's measured, matters (and it's important to make the measurement easy - or better yet, automatic!) 🤝 Workshop: Mapping Solutions, Bridging Gaps in Food Waste Reduction. I had the pleasure of facilitating a workshop with Nia D'Emilio, led by Selena Mao, to audit the current ReFED solutions to food waste, and assess ongoing needs. It was a pleasure to work with retail grocery colleagues including Natasha Tofil and Kaity Robbins who are leading work to reduce in-store retail waste. We even pitched an solution to make it easier to divert waste in grocery stores :) ❤️ The incredible ReFED Team. The team has grown substantially since last year’s Summit and continues to do the work our whole ecosystem relies on: researching, reporting, and advocating for food waste reduction in the U.S. Thank you for galvanizing us, and providing a moment for us all to get organized, energized, and reinvigorated so we can keep saving food from loss and waste.
