Empowering Exceptional Military Families Through Advocacy and Education
About us
Mission Alpha was established in October 2021 due to a growing movement of military families advocating for autism services for their children. Our passion is to empower not only those exceptional military families within the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) but all families receiving Department of Defense or Veteran Affairs benefits. Advocating for autism services is only the beginning for Mission Alpha. We are committed to creating thoughtful policies and legislation to positively affect the daily life of the military-affiliated families affected by all disabilities and special needs We empower exceptional military families by representing and advocating on their behalf as well as teaching them how to represent and advocate for themselves.

Brushing teeth was so hard! My son couldn’t handle the feel of the brush bristles against his teeth. It lead to crying (both of us), bruised fingers, and extreme avoidance. It’s such a small part of our day but I would dread it. I thought if we just pushed through then he would then he would eventually get used to it. I was so wrong. I finally wised up and realized I needed to change. I needed to think about what he enjoys. This video shows the first time he was offered a vibrating toothbrush. He immediately accepted it. I’ll admit the vibrating toothbrush didn’t clean his teeth as well but we were both happier. It took six months to transition to a regular toothbrush but we did it at his pace. I was humbled and learned my way isn’t the only way. I needed to change my perspective. ~Kristi, MAA team member #specialneeds #autism #neurodiversity #sensory #lifelessons #militaryfamily #TRICARE #MAA #MissionAlphaAdvocacy

We will always jump at the chance to present on #TRICARE #ABA services! Next week #MAA's CEO & Founder Dr. Kristi Cabiao, MAA Board Member Dr. Gina Green, and advocate Rebecca Womack will facilitate a discussion on TRICARE at the National Autism Law Summit. We'll provide a brief update on the status of the #autism care demonstration (#ACD) and steps moving forward. Then open the floor to group discussion and crowdsourcing advocacy ideas. Many hands make light work, and we can't wait to collaborate with fellow advocates in the autism space #missionalphaadvocacy #efmp #military

From spending time visiting the respite alpacas to meeting Senator Elizabeth Dole, the #MAA team members enjoyed a day of networking and learning the latest in the #military caregiving community. MAA team members, Katherine Weaver and Lizet Williams, attended the 9th Annual Elizabeth Dole Foundation Convening in Washington D.C. During the conference they met with reps from TriWest, Congress and other nonprofits working to improve the quality of life for military #caregivers. A highlight was the release of the 2024 RAND report on military caregivers. The report found that caregivers for wounded warriors less than 60 years old reported higher rates of depression and food insecurity. 40% of these caregivers also care for children in the home. Our focus at MAA is to #empower military-connected families with dependents who have exceptional needs and disabilities to advocate for access to worldclass health care and a high quality of life. This data from the RAND report, will aid our mission as we seek to secure improved access to quality #autism services, mental health services and respite services through #TRICARE. Our hearts hurt for all of the families affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Sharing information from the #TRICARE newsroom on resources available to ensure continuity of care during natural disasters. If your family is displaced due to the recent hurricanes, the requirement to receive a primary care referral in order to continue specialty care will be waived. You may also receive an emergency medication refill at ANY TRICARE retail pharmacy in network. Sharing the link: https://bit.ly/3Y2lKOT #maa #missionalphaadvocacy #efmp #militaryspouse #military

Resharing an infographic the #MAA used on earlier #advocacy trips to Capitol Hill in 2024. 🔥As a result of our trips, the MAA team secured report language in the House draft of the Defense Bill: 1)Direct the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to provide a report to Congress on the adequacy of the ABA provider network and ability to support the demand for ABA services 2)Directing the GAO to provide a report on the disparities in the services provided by TRICARE's ECHO supplemental program and state Medicaid Home-Based Community Services Waiver program 🔥The MAA team also worked with Senators to secure report language in the Senate draft of the Defense Bill: 1)Directs DHA to consult with the Marine Corps and commission a similar study assessing the prevalence rate of autism within the EFMP-enrolled population over a 5-year period and determine whether the existing TRICARE network of ABA providers is sufficient to accommodate the existing and projected needs The Defense Bill has not been passed into law. It's anticipated to occur close to Christmas. 🎅Let's hope to celebrate a Merry Christmas with the passing of this language!🎅 #efmp #tricare #acd #autism #missionalphaadvocacy #militarylife

AAC stands for “Augmentative and Alternative Communication” and essentially means helping someone communicate using any form of communication other than speech. Many people associate #AAC with speech tablets, like an iPad. When speech is not adequate to achieve the child’s communicative purposes, a child must find a way to close any gaps (which is especially important as the child enters school). This may be through using sign language, picture books, or a speech tablet. We're not professional lobbyists. All of us are caregivers to children with exceptional needs and most of us are also enrolled ourselves in the Exceptional Family Member Program (#efmp). Advocacy days on Capitol Hill are a rare occurence due to our caregiving duties, but we maximize every second. In a typical advocacy day, the #MAA team will brief 10-15 offices. Between appointments we'll stop by other offices to leave infographics and cards to schedule virtual meetings at a later time. We'll pack in two days of briefings and then devote the next two weeks to follow up emails, virtual visits, and phone calls. Half the time we're lost in the buildings on Capitol Hill and our feet have blisters, but we have grit and we push through to get the job done. #advocate #empower #acd #military #tricare #familyfirst
