About us
The Missouri Historical Society (MHS) makes history meaningful and accessible through its three physical locations in St. Louis: the Missouri History Museum, the Library & Research Center and the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. MHS has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, MHS serves as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues. Collecting for more than 150 years, MHS houses one of the largest collections of artifacts and historical materials of any regional history institution in the United States. Missouri Historical Society Members and donors support its work of collecting, preserving and sharing the history of this region. The Missouri History Museum and the Library & Research Center receive funding from the St. Louis City and County taxpayers through the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District.

We’re excited about the new show "Conjuring the Spirit World" that's opening today at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts—not only because it sounds fascinating but also because it includes a daguerreotype from our collections. The Missouri Historical Society regularly loans artifacts to museums across the country and around the globe.

Thank you for coloring with us, St. Louis! This week the Missouri Historical Society's Public History team gathered for a final walkthrough and debrief as we prepare to close the #ColoringSTL exhibit next week. This show has had quite a run over the last two years. 🎨 We introduced people to STL buildings they never knew and reintroduced them to structures they'd seen but might have never really considered. Here's the thing: people will care more about St. Louis and its future if they feel personally connected to it in the present. Architecture and the buildings we drive and walk past each day are excellent entry points to building that sense of place. 🎨 More than 375,000 St. Louisans burned through nearly *5,000* dry erase markers, bringing countless works of art to life that ranged from cows grazing on the roof of the Pevely Dairy building to Godzilla hanging off the side of the City Museum. 🎨 We hosted countless programs ranging from gameshow-style STL structure showdowns to insightful community conversations with former residents of the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex and partnerships with local artists and organizations making St. Louis a more colorful place to live. 🎨 We published a terrific coloring book alongside the exhibit, bringing this unique love letter to St. Louis architecture down from the walls and onto pages for people to take home. It won an award as one of the most creative history publications of 2023 and will live on in our Sold on St. Louis shop. 🎨 We introduced a new generation of young St. Louisans to the Missouri History Museum. After two years of coloring, the littles who have been visiting us since 2022 are now starting kindergarten. This exhibit joined our History Clubhouse in cementing our Museum as dependable and exciting free spot for families to play, learn, and grow. It's tough to say goodbye when an exhibit is as iconic and well-loved as Coloring STL. We know we've done a good job with a show when people ask us "can't this just stay open forever?" Rest assured, there are exciting things in store for this gallery over the next several months. But this weekend, I hope you'll join us for one last coloring session. We've got a great lineup of programs for closing weekend, and we'll be open on Labor Day Monday (full holiday weekend schedule: https://lnkd.in/gkG5R8Wq) Thank you for coloring with us, St. Louis!
