Our department offers an undergraduate BS degree in physics as well as graduate MS and PhD degrees. We have strong research programs in astrophysics; atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics; as well as condensed matter and materials physics. Our AMO physics program is the only such program in the University of Missouri System. Our astrophysics program houses the only LIGO (gravitational wave) research group in the state.

We are grateful to have our first session with Prof Julia Medvedeva this coming Monday.

As part of our Physics First-Year Success Initiative, I instituted a Week-4-Checkin for our new physics majors. All first-year and new transfer students are required to meet with their advisor (i.e. me), so that we can identify any problems early on. This also helps normalizing meeting the advisor and lowers barriers which might prevent students from seeking help. I met with 26 students one-on-one this week. We talked about dorm living, class work, and student organizations. I am happy to see that our new physics majors have settled in, are doing well, and are feeling part of our campus community. #Advising #StudentSuccess

We bid a warm welcome to Francesco Enrico Teofilo, a Masters student from the University of Pisa. He will stay with us for 10 weeks as an exchange visitor within the LIGO-INFN program (INFN = Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics). He is working with Dr. Cavaglia on a project to quantify the effect of gravitational lensing on gravitational-wave signals.
