In the world of emerging technologies, there are terms that may be unfamiliar. We are here to help! In 2003, bioengineer Thomas Boland created the first bioprinter, modifying a Hewlett-Packard inkjet printer to use bovine cells instead of ink. Two decades later, bioprinting is revolutionizing some medical treatments, with patients receiving 3D-printed skin, ears and other implants made from living tissue. Though many internal organs, such as hearts and lungs, have yet to be printed successfully, bioprinting has the potential to shorten waitlists for lifesaving transplants. To learn more about how bioprinting works, check out this video from TED-Ed: https://buff.ly/35DwIOG Every other week, MIT Horizon will share easy-to-understand definitions of terms used in the emerging technology arena. If there’s a specific term you’d like to know more about, let us know in the comments below. #EmTech #TechnologyVocabulary #Bioprinting #AdditiveManufacturing #3DPrinting
