Clean hydrogen on-site. No new pipelines. No new storage. No delivery trucks. Near zero and negative CO2.
About us
Modern Hydrogen's distributed hydrogen production systems enable clean heat and fuel, today. No waiting on hydrogen pipelines, or delivery trucks. No large, high-pressure storage necessary. No more emissions. Electricity can be used in many simple heating and power applications, but many high-grade heating applications remain out of reach. Additionally, the total amount of energy required for peak heating in the U.S. is more than double the capacity of our national electrical grid. This means that most heating in the U.S. cannot be electrified today and will not be fully electrified and powered by a clean grid for decades to come. So, what can be done to solve the massive problem of today’s emissions? At Modern Hydrogen, we understand the importance of energy-dense fuels and the high value of effectively storing and transporting them. When we focused our expertise in high-temperature physics, thermomechanical design, and applied chemistry on the problem, Modern Hydrogen™ was the result. We operate at the leading edge of new technologies that effectively decarbonize natural gas at the point of use for commercial and industrial operations, fuel cells, and power generation. Modern Hydrogen™ technology showcases many of the newest innovations in the transportation and production of clean hydrogen and high value solid carbon. Contact us today to learn more.

Happy #NationalHydrogenDay! Today, we hosted local stakeholders, policymakers, and climate advocates at our headquarters as part of the Association of Washington Business Manufacturing Week bus tour. We're proud that Modern Hydrogen is advancing clean energy technology right here in Washington. As part of #ManufacturingWeek, we demonstrated our innovative methane pyrolysis process, which produces clean hydrogen and solid Modern Carbon. The event underscored the critical role that manufacturing plays in driving economic growth while supporting the state’s ambitious climate goals. Big thanks to the Association of Washington Business for organizing this event and to everyone who joined us, including Woodinville Mayor Mike Millman, Woodinville Chamber Commerce, Impact Washington - NIST MEP, CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen), neighboring city council members, and more. Washington is at the forefront of a cleaner, more sustainable future. Learn more about our technology and team at ModernHydrogen.com. #CleanEnergy #HydrogenEconomy #AWB #SustainabilityInAction #Manufacturing #Hydrogen #NaturalGas #Decarbonization #Roads #Asphalt #Potholes #Pavement #Infrastructure #CleanConstruction
Modern Hydrogen was founded in 2015 with investors and customers such as Bill Gates, NextEra Energy, National Grid, and Northwest Natural. The company’s mission is to make energy both cleaner and cheaper. Modern provides practical, clean energy solutions using existing natural gas infrastructure for hard-to-decarbonize sectors, and employs 100 people. The company manufacturers clean hydrogen generation technology using modern methane pyrolysis. Modern Hydrogen developed a pyrolysis process that is low-energy, low-cost, and low-emission. Starting with natural gas or biogas, Modern’s systems heat that gas up and break off the carbon atoms, leaving behind hydrogen molecules. The carbon can then be added to asphalt to be sequestered. The process is thermally driven and catalyst free, which means simplified operations and a low electrical load compared to alternatives. Taking advantage of existing, reliable infrastructure to deliver methane to the point of use means there is no waiting for truck deliveries, no need for large high-pressure storage, and no limitations based on your power supply. AWB visited the company’s Woodinville facility on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the fourth day of the eighth-annual Manufacturing Week bus tour.

Hear directly from the experts! National Grid leaders and key DPW, DOT, and policy stakeholders in New York share their thoughts on this week's carbon-sequestering asphalt demo in Long Island and the material's potential for decarbonizing infrastructure. In this edition of our newsletter "Making Inroads," we hear from those who witnessed the first live demonstration of Modern Asphalt in the Northeast. Here’s why this matters: 💠 Real Climate Action: Our technology turns carbon from natural gas and biogas into a solid material, used in asphalt. This reduces CO2 emissions in the atmosphere while creating practical solutions to fight climate change. 💠 Everyday Relevance: Asphalt is everywhere — from driveways to highways and airports. Imagine the environmental impact if we could replace oil-based materials with carbon-sequestering asphalt in every road. 💠 Economic and Environmental Win: This innovation can lower road costs and maintenance while building a sustainable future using existing infrastructure and workforces. It's a win for both the economy and the planet. What is the role of existing infrastructure in building the future? This team at BuiltWorlds Infrastructure conference debated this in DC this week. “Systems and structures we depend on and even take for granted may be key to setting the United States up for future success. Alongside key innovations and technology, what existing infrastructure can be leveraged to build, maintain, and improve the resilience of our nation's energy systems, surface transportation infrastructure, and to shore up the critical junction between our built world and the people with the know-how to build and maintain it?” Thank you BuiltWorlds for featuring Modern Hydrogen solutions. Speakers: Benjamin Dierker, Executive Director, Alliance for Innovation & Infrastructure Anthony J. 📰 Hot off the press: We’re featured in Hart Energy in a story about the immense potential of methane pyrolysis to decarbonize natural gas. Our innovative approach turns natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon—both with significant value multipliers. This technology can reshape the way industries approach decarbonization. As VP of Business Development Mothusi Pahl summed it up: "Wherever you have a natural gas connection today, you can quite literally remove the carbon from that natural gas and deliver a clean fuel for any commercial, industrial, or transportation operation." Excerpt from the story: There is a potential revenue stream that some natural gas producers should not overlook, experts say. Depending on the production method, it has no CO2 emissions. It has two main value-adding products. It is produced from natural gas—an abundant, low-cost energy source in the U.S. And, technology breakthroughs could elevate its status on the so-called Swiss Army knife of energy and amplify its impact on the world’s decarbonization journey. Pyrolytic hydrogen, or “turquoise hydrogen” for those familiar with the hydrogen color wheel, is produced via pyrolysis. The process involves heating natural gas, or methane (CH4), to temperatures of at least 900 C to break the molecule into hydrogen and carbon—both of which have established markets.
