As companies modernize their information-technology tools, #mainframe computers will continue to play a role. Part of the mainframe’s staying power is that it can support huge numbers of transactions, as many as 30,000 a second, at super fast speeds. Mainframes are also prized for their reliability and features that protect against cyberattacks, business leaders say. Even if part of the computer goes down, it remains operational because it can switch to other components. For IBM, the mainframe has already found new life as a place to run #AI. The company’s latest mainframe can immediately return results from AI models. The best strategy for companies today is to integrate legacy mainframes with emerging technologies like AI. A CrowdStrike IT outage has affected 8.5 million Windows devices. Thousands of Windows machines are experiencing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issue, impacting banks, airlines, TV broadcasters, supermarkets, and many other businesses worldwide. The glitch originated from a corrupted software update sent out by the security company CrowdStrike to its customers. The issue was not caused by Microsoft, but the company has been helping to mitigate the consequences of the massive outage by providing ongoing updates and support. This incident demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem, including global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors, other software vendors, and customers, commented Microsoft on the issue. Surprisingly, Southwest Airlines, the fourth largest airline in the US, was unaffected by the #CrowdStrike update because it used Windows 3.1. What luck for users of legacy systems!

Over half of the surveyed companies cited increased security and improved efficiency as the primary reasons for modernizing #legacyapplications and data in 2023. Close to 50% also mentioned cost reduction, better integration with modern technologies, and greater agility and flexibility.
