Last week I was on a MODX Meetup (yep, freelancing again isn't as unlikely as I thought). The event was cool, interesting speakers, useful topics, things like that. But what really got me was the atmosphere. Not sure how to call it, the meeting-and-greeting stuff. The moment I stepped in, somebody saw me, noticed me, came to me, asked my name… and suddenly I’m in the middle of conversation. And then again. And again! It’s like people who are throwing a party come to greet every guest personally. Seemed like everybody knew each other, and there were only few new faces (mine included), so everyone made sure we weren’t isolated and didn’t feel alien. Because that’s what was happening on many meetups and other events that I visited before. If you don’t know anybody, that’s how it stays. Not sure how this whole networking thing is supposed to work in this case. Sadly, I think that when I was making IT-events myself, I wasn’t that welcoming either. It’s not that I was ignoring everyone, but it never occurred to me that I could make newcomers feel less like strangers. And this MODX event really blew my mind and showed how the thing should be done. Maybe it’s the culture. Maybe beer had something to to with it. #MODXMeetup
